some stands won't work because of the hub spacing is too large. what are you using?

ThPark TS-2 will with the extensions.
The updated version of the TS-2 is the TS-2.2 and does not require the extensions as does the older TS-2
Trimmed zip ties on the seat stays and on a spare rigid fork. I know...nobody wants to hear the ghetto solution. But I read about it here and it saved me $200 on a truing stand!
I have a TS2 or 2.2... It doesn't require extensions. Come to think of it, aside from my son's 20 and 24" wheels, it's had nothing but 29" wheels in it. I'm going to find out shortly if Surly Clownshoes are going to fit in there.

That's how Ive been truing my wheels. Finally took the plunge and built a wheel Friday and used the zip tie on the seat stay and it came out straight as an arrow. Took careful measurements to get the dish right & set the zip tie to that.
Minoura true pro 2 is not as rigid as the park ts, but it is also $100 cheaper. In the year I've owned it, I've built five wheelsets with great results, three of them 29". Minoura True Pro 2 Wheel Truing Stand - Bike Tools / Bike Workstands
I have had a Performance stand for 15 years now. I've built several sets of 29er wheels on it and recently found that I could true a 29" wheel with the tire still on just by letting the air out. It was tubeless with Stans and I didnt want to have to take the tire off.
I agree for easy solution

I use a stand from 90's to true, but have to take my tire off. My back wheel was out of true and my lbs was repairing my fork, so i told him to true it (I was paying $45 hour labor any ways).

He stuck a finger on the rear stay and spun the wheel to see if it hit his finger. If it touch he stop it their and true it. Point is that you don't need to take the wheel or tire off bike and easier to true. As long as you didn't egg the wheel.

I have the 20 mm fork so I think the wheel moves with those addapts so the stand really doesn't matter. They need to build a better stand to allow 15mm and 20mm maxle to fit.

Or perhaps a rubber band and pencil?
