Sorry if the question sounds stupid, but I'm building a new bike and want to persuade some friends to join me in the mountains.
Of course they don't know how cool is that sport and therefore can't spend too much on that, so I said to one of them to get at least a 500 bucks bike to start in.
What make/model can I suggest them?

For less than $500, you should look at used. There are some good deals to be had under $500. I see plenty of Trek 8000 series and Specialized Stumpjumpers going for that price range. It will be a few years old, but most are in great rideable condition that should last a few more years.
