From a Craigslist add, but I have no idea what it is. Looks like it goes into a regular handle bar?

It does. Think of it as a VERY big bar end. If I remember right, it came out in the era of the first tri bars for road bikes. it was an attempt to do the same for a mountain bike. It would go in front of the actual bars and mount at both ends.

Sort of like the light bar on a pickup? I can't see how it did not take off.
Well, the light/roll bar on a pickup was cool in the 80's too. There are still lots of trucks out there with them. Not too many mountain bikes with aero bars though.

Buy em. Retro in everything else is cool these days. Why not these.:D

Light bars are a good analogy. Personally I think those were closer to the MTB equivalent to brush/bash guards. Heh.

Heavy I imagine, but those would be good for gadget freaks that run out of bar room for all their lights, bells, gps, cell, hrm, cameras, fuzzy dice, etc. Plus it keeps you from hooking your barends, or bashing your knuckles if you tend to run into things. LOL. :p
