What is it about cycling that makes us like it so much?

Way to get outside, explore nature, exercise, have fun riding with friends, travel to new destinations to ride and be able to drink all these beers and eat all those burritos.

Yeah, what Ryan said. Plus all the self induced suffering...'cause it builds character or gives you perspective on life or some crap like that. :p Honestly, my bikes have taken me to places that I would never have seen and met people that I would never have met otherwise. That's pretty cool in my eyes.
Everything that has been already said, and it makes me feel like I am 10 again!
Agreed

I don't know about being 10 again, but it's definitely keeping me youthful, except for the crashing part, which reminds me I am not.:nono:

Just watched Klunkers and was reassured that the times we spend out on the trails are not some passing fad. :D
all that stuff ANDDDD you get to be active and stay fit while having FUN.

anyone who rides a treadmill and says they're having fun gets slapped!

:)
Maximum anodization! Pink Purple Green and Blue

...keeps me going.

...off to put on another Nirvana CD.../sigh/

Cheers
Like Fight Club, everything else gets the volume turned way down when I'm riding. Nothing can force me to focus on the moment like taking Braille as fast as I can, and even on the road there's a meditative quality to just turning the pedals that is extremely calming.
Helps me escape reality. wow d00d, cool

it's the edge, the place where you are most alive
It stops the pain...

I have money burning a hole in my pocket which of course makes my legs hurt.
MTB allows me to keep my pockets empty!
Ahhh - relief :)

Yes!

Reminds me of a good friend (RIP, Ben) whose favorite saying was "If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space." We were doing some crazy mountaineering, but the alive feeling is the same.

- I like bike parts. I like bikes and parts that weigh nothing and parts that are beefy. I like ones that look good, work good and make me ride good.

- I like high end coffee that I drink to wake up and I love the craft beers that I earn after the ride.

- I like eating with reckless abandon and not gain a pound when I ride unrestrained.

- I like bike people. I love spending time with cyclists. I like meeting new ones. I love just hanging out and sharing everything on this list with others.

- I like riding solo. Without anything else on this list, I can ride solo forever.

- I love climbing. I like crushing my body, getting into thin air and the sense of accomplishment. Even if there was no descent, I would still climb.

- I enjoy descending. I like flying and carving.

- I love the road bike, the cross bike, the singlespeed, the downhill bike... all of them.

- I like that cycling adds 10-20 years to my life. It is the fountain of youth.

- I like the soil, the sun, the sky and water and my bike, my friends and flying, carving, climbing forever.

Gonna steal bits from others in this thread, but basically it takes me to different places:

1. To the edge, where you feel most alive
2. To be with great friends and great times
3. Away from the stress of real life
4. To that happy place
how about just the natural chemicals it produces that give you a natural high?
I like that when I'm riding a fast or technical trail, there is a complete absence of thought that takes place. It's just see and react. Mountain biking is the only activity that can take me to this state.

I like the sense of accomplishment I feel after climbing a hill that I previously had to walk or hitting a jump or line that used to scare the crap out of me.

I like getting away from all the trappings that we've surrounded our lives with and just being outside with the trees and the dirt. I'm kind of a hippie like that.

I like that after every ride, no matter how epic or routine, I feel lucky to be alive.

riding with you!! :D
I hate cycling
I like being upon a contraption that climbs, glides, bucks and carves.

Indeed it is great to be out with comrades- new and known on mini or grand adventures getting closer to nature. Yes, Norton 55, it looks like tomorrow morning will work for riding the forest and ridges near you.

Gratitude for all the replies. They inspire me to cycle more.

There is quite some magic riding at night, eh?
