Which part of the fork is the star nut, and what is its purpose? Thanks!

the star nut is inside the stearer tube, along with the cap bolt,it is there to provide the tension for the headset brgs. if you are getting a new fork, and not real mechainicaaly inclined, have your lbs install the nut, they are easy to get crooked which make it not line up for the bolt.

Or better still, get an expander plug to replace the star nut - they work a lot better, easy to install, and are easier to remove if you want to change forks.
