I am fixing up my old (2007) XC bike for all-mountain riding, and I need to replace the rear derailleur but it seems like most modern bike parts are 10 speed. My 2010 Scott CR1 is 10 speed, but I thought it was a difference between road and mountain bikes... I guess I was wrong.

Why is 9 speed being phased out? I haven't noticed any real benefit from having a 10 speed on my road bike vs 9 speed on my mountain bike.

more is more better

Its just the trend, personally I benefit from 10 speeds. You can still get 9 speed parts, actually a bit cheaper.

10sp shimano ROAD rd's work with shimano 9sp shifters. Also i think there is some shimano "touring" series that is compatible, i think they have xt even. Basically all shimanos road rds up to and including 10sp is compatible with 9sp mtb shifters.

I run a 9sp xtr shifter with a 10sp road rd, pulling 8sp spacing on my custom 6sp cassette with the help of a j-tek.

I didn't see the benefit either so i reverted back to a 15 year old standard.

If I Google "9 speed derailleur" or "9 speed shifter" I get lots of hits and lots of places selling them. No problem getting 9 speed components.
Not much in high end road stuff though.
