Tell us more about your current bike. Mt bikes are pretty versatile. You should think about mounting points for your front and rear racks. Or trailer. Or frame bags. Also you will want smooth tires. Triple chainrings? Those would work well for the low end. 44-11 should be enough for the high end.

Where is Montana are you looking to go? You might be able to hook up with part of the CDT. It would probably be more interesting than some of the roads.

I would look at a 29er with semi-slicks (maybe SB8s) and bikepacking bags. That way you could hit singletrack on your way. A Salsa Fargo might be a good alternative also.
