As the title asks - what companies out there will do custom wheel builds that allow you to supply your own rims and hubs?
I've got a set of new rims and hubs sitting here waiting to be laced up. I had it all set up with Prowheelbuilder.com (who built my last set) but it took so long to receive the rims (LB made to order) that when they arrived ProWheelBuilder was out of stock of my desired spokes. They said their supplier estimates July for restock 😱

Most of the places I know of that do custom wheels won't allow you to supply any of your own parts.

Any recommendations would be appreciated 👍

I don’t know but a rat at your local shop would probably take it on. Or take the time to (learn &) lace it yourself then pay a shop to tension it if all else fails.

When they were in the Bay Area they built a lot of wheels. Really nice guys that I would recommend.

Definitely this. Assuming you have a shop or two in the area, give them a ring and ask how much it costs for a wheel build if you supply the parts. They will normally give you a price and lead time on the spot.

My LBS just built me a set of wheels. The rims were cracked on the old wheels and the LBS was not able to get the new rims I wanted. I brought in the hubs and rims. They sourced the spokes and nipples and built them.

Seriously though, LBS isn"t an option, more of a last resort, end of the world kinda thing.

I didn't supply my own parts, but my experience buying wheels from Mike See at lacemine29.com could not have been better. Super easy to work with, great communication, he really goes out of his way to make sure you're going to be happy with the end product.

Don’t use him, unless you want it done correctly. I build my own wheels, but if I didn’t, he would be my first choice.

Daves Wheels in AZ did mine. I supplied hubs and rims, he supplied spokes, nipples, tape, stems... Great attention to detail and quick turn around time.

One more plug for Mike C. I used to build my own wheels, but had him build me a carbon / Onyx set when I was in the process of moving and didn’t have a shop. Best set of wheels I’ve ever owned or ridden.

I'd start with an LBS or just search google maps for wheel builder in your town and read reviews.

Thanks for all the responses. The Berd is interesting, saw that review from Worldwide Cyclery a while back. The problem is $8 a spoke x 64 spokes 😱

I'll shoot an email over to Dave's Wheels and lacemine29.com on Monday and see what happen 👍

Unfortunately BERD won't lace wheels without holes in the rim bed, thus requiring you to use rim tape.

I'll vote for Mike lacemine29.com also. He built a set of wheels for me earlier this year. He was great to work with and the wheels have been excellent.
Couldn't have been better.
