Hello everyone,

I hope I can get a general idea here as what bike to get. I am a runner ( 30-40 miles per month) but due to injury I will not be running for a while, therefor I want to get into mountain bike.

I dont know exactly what to buy and I just found out there is so much to choose from.

I will be riding mostly weekends( during summer I will probably do more).

I would like to stay under $1000.00 Hopefully someone outhere can educate me as to what to look for when I buy the bike like:
What type of frame
what type of components ( from low, mid and high quality)
Front suspension versus full suspension.

Do I need a really expensive bike to enjoy the trails?
Hope I can get some feedbak and /or recommended bikes.

What type of bike depends really on what you personally want to ride. Based on the fact that you are new you will probably want a bike that "leans" towards XC or AM. In other words a bike with somewhere between 3.5" and 5" of travel./B]

For 1k you will get an alum. frame.
what type of components ( from low, mid and high quality)
Best you can get for the money you are spending...
Front suspension versus full suspension.
Up to you. You will most likely find that you will be able to do more faster and hurt less with a FS bike. However you will get more (higher components) for your money on a hardtail.

Hard tails that I would look at for 1k:

I would look hard at the Ibex and the IH at performance.

For FS it gets trickier as you have to compare both components and linkage systems. for me a well working linkage system is more important that the component level so of the bikes I have exp. with I would look at:

I also like Specialized and Giant linkage systems but you really can't get into them for 1k.

No, get the best that you are comfortable spending. As this way it will take you longer to outgrow the bike..if you ever do...and if you keep it in good condition it is easier IMO to sell a 1k dollar bike than it is to sell a 500 dollar bike...and not take a big loss.
Hope I can get some feedbak and /or recommended bikes.

In the end, have fun and ride.

Alot of what bike to buy depends on what type of riding you plan to do.
If you want to ride trails & go up hills XC.
If you want to rail agressive trails drop some drops, kick ars fun but have to ride up to enjoy yourself, AM
If you want to huck massive drops and gaps, twist a back flip or two, rock some DH trails, FR

Good all round fun bike, AM.

Why don't you visit your local bike shop and see what they have? The guys there will ask the usual questions, like... what type of riding you want to do? and how much you like to spend? They will recommend some bikes in your price range and will let you ride them.

Come back here if you find something interesting. For someone who doesn't have any idea what bike? and what to look for?, the local bike shops are the places to go as you will actually see and ride the bikes.
