It has been a while (10 + yrs.) since I've raced however I plan on doing a few races this year and was wonder what bikes people will be racing. I'm interested with what to expect in terms of the hardware that is being used these days. I realize that the bike doesn't win the race its the rider. So with that I'll start. Thanks in advance. R

What bike will you show up with at starting line this year?
A 1996 M2 stumpjumper. I plan on upgrading the tired Mag 21 shock and brakes

Key features about bike?
The bike is tough as nails and holds a line well.

Notable components?
Thompson seatpost, and a future used shock upgrade to Fox 80, and Avid V brakes

Typical type of XC race (24hr., long distance, laps)?
Laps and a possible 24hr.

What class are you going to race?
Beginner and later in the season a move up to sport (if everything goes as planned)

laps around ohio and wv singletrack. for some reason every trail in ohio seems to be 5-7 miles long, so all the races are usually 2-4 laps.

2003 Sugar 2. Currently upgrading Fox Talus R fork to Talus RLC during factory fork rebuild. It weighs about 26 lbs. Will upgrade wheels this year; probably Dave's speeddream wheels; hopefully that will get it in the 25's.

Key features about bike?
It fits me great, doesn't hurt my back, and it has a lifetime warranty. This is my second frame after the first one cracked. So my current frame is actually a 2006.

Notable components?
Bike is full XT except for XTR rear derrailer. Everything original except upgraded components here and there: XT cranks, thompson stem, thompson seatpost, SI Nitrox saddle, and monkey light bar. Really nothing special. I go with the Lance philosphy: "it's not about the bike!" I may have $2000 total into this bike.

Typical type of XC race (24hr., long distance, laps)?
Rocky Mountain styled Laps, and 24 hour. Also do one short track every year. Would like to add a 100-miler this year.

What class are you going to race?
My first official race in Expert will be March 3rd.

I borrowed that bike one summer when my I-drive frame broke years ago. I loved that hardtail!!!

I put some big tires (2.4R and 2.5F) and a 4 inch Marzoke fork on it while I was using it. I could climb anything on that thing!!!

Race fork for stumpjumper

Hey bike flyer,
Amazing. I have a 96 m2 stumpy and I'm doing the same thing you are. Which shocks are you looking at? Let know so we can compare notes. Thanks
I've narrowed it down to two or three 80mm forks w/Vbrake mounts. Any higher will mess with the geometry from what I've been told. I'm leaning towards a used Fox F80RLT. I currently have a Fox Talas on my Yeti which has been a decent fork. The other forks that in the running are Manitou R7, and RockShock SID. The bike has some limitations with respect to the geometry and brakes otherwise in my opinion its a solid frame to race.

2006 Cannondale Rush 1000
I like it because it is the 1st bike I've owned that stock is under 30lbs. (Now about 28) The Lefty, Sram X9, XT crank and road race saddle are awesome.
-Will probably use it for technical XC races, shortrack (my HT is too small)...and, I hope to try some endurance races like Vermont 50, or NH 100km. maybe a 24 hour, but I doubt it.

-Junior (14 + under) mens Sport.
