Just starting plans for a trip to Utah. Read "what is the best season?" thread and got some ideas and found the UtahMountainBiking site. Have done a mid Sept. time of year trip to Fruita/Grand Mesa and Moab....it was fantastic.

Looking to try SLC area in July or August. What do you think of a Sat to Sat trip riding the Park City/SLC/Ogden area and a trip out to Vernal thrown in? Not sure we can get all that in but if anyone has any recommendations on where you would ride it will help. Thx.

If you hit Vernal, I'd do the McCoy Flats area. If you don't stop a lot and are in good shape, it'll take you about 4-5 hours to hit Jackelop then Hoes to the first half of Retail to Slippery When Wet to the 2nd half of Retail then Fire Sale. Were it me, I'd hit Red Mountain/Rojo first then the McCoy Flats area. If you have another day, then hit the Springfield area.
If you're only going to be in Salt Lake for a couple of days,I wouldn't go to Vernal (3 hour drive). There's so much riding to be had in the Park City area. If you like to ride 3-5 hours/day,Park City has enough for a weekend/3 days full of riding. The Classic ride is the Wasatch Crest connected to the mid mountain trail. It's an all day affair and is one of the best rides you'll ever do. Starting in Park City, take the Spiro Trail up to Jupiter Bowl to the Crest Trail, take the Crest across down into The Canyons Ski Resort and then back to Park City via the mid mountain. The attached link has a map of exactly what I'm talking about. Your starting point is the parking lot noted by a "P" at the BOTTOM of the map. Note finding the crest trail after you pass the bottom of the Jupiter Bowl Ski lift can be confusing. I'd drop in to the local PC bike shop and ask them about this and I'm sure they can tell you exactly what to do so you don't miss it.

Have Fun!:)

Looks like it would be....

......a saturday arrival and departure the next saturday....so that is at least 6 days of riding.... appreciate the advice given so far....anybody else have any thoughts on which trails to ride and how to arrange the days....thanks very much.
I'll take a shot at it.

Day 1. Canyons to PCMR Via Mid Mountain trail then Up Johns Trail to Jupiter bowl and then back onto Mid-Mountain to Deer Valley. Basically Stages 1 and 2 of the now Defunct E100 MTB race. Maybe break this up into two days if your fitness is not well above above average. Don't forget to find your way over to spin cycle instead or riding the paved road back into town.

Day 2. Shuttle The Crest. The six or so hours of climbing yesterday should be sufficient to fry your legs. Solution = use the wasatch crest shuttle service. Park your car at the base of millcreek canyon and they will take you to the top of Big Cottonwood. Climb Puke Hill and Desend the crest to Bigwater in Millcreek canyon. Then ride down the pipeline and back to your car. This is about the pedalyist 3 hour all down hill ride anywhere.

Day 3. Solitude Mtn Resort. I basically ride the XC race course at solitude. Even now that I don't race I always hit it a few times a year One of the Funnest downhills in the Valley in my opinion it is just not well known cause you actually have to pedal all the way to the top, and the climb is a good one. 2 laps maybe one forward and one reverse should make for a good 2 hour day. I never ride in reverse because the normal downhill is so awesome. If you want to ride more you could ride up Mill D to Dog lake and then back down or take another trip up puke hill and come down Mill D and then pedal back up the road to your car.

Day 4. Early am Bobsled. 1 maybe 2 laps. Its likely to be hot hot hot in July or Aug, but the Bobsled is a must do slc trail. Guess you could do all the toursit stuff while you are in Downtown SLC (Temple etc.) Also take the short hike to the top of ensign peak for a great city view. PM Ride Muller park Trail in Bountiful. This has always been one of my favorite trails cause it seems to be just right Steep enough that if you want to workout you can grindup in your middle ring dripping sweat and occasionally begging for mercy, but its easy enough that it can be a nice easy ride in granny gear and in the shade so its really relaxing Its also like 1.5 hours to ride up and back down so its the perfect length. I think alot of people would not put this on a SLC ride list but for me it has that just right quality about it that makes it one of my favs. Also the Sunset views over elephant rock are amazing

Day 5. Lift served biking at Deer Valley or Sundance. I have never done either but your legs are gonna be fried.

Day 6. American Fork canyon. Ride the ridge 157 Trail. Don't miss the downhill to Tibble fork res. Good stuff.

Day 7. Jesus that sounds like alot of riding.

Pedal's recommendations look solid. You'll need to make sure you shuttle the crest on an even day if you come down Millcreek and out pipeline (no bikes on odd days in millcreek canyon) Otherwise, come out at Mill D in Big Cottonwood or do a nice long loop coming back on Park City's Mid mountain trail.

If you make it out to Vernal, check out Strawberry narrows trail which is on the way.

I sent a guy from out of town out on Mueller park last summer and he said it was the best ride of his life. While I wouldn't go that far, it's easily accessible and makes a great evening ride. By the way, it gets dark pretty late in Salt Lake, in July and August you can ride until 9:00 or later without lights.

Really, there is so much riding here you can't go wrong.
SLC is really sounding great.....

......Johnyspoke, PedalFaraway, ilovemtnbiking and Ruiane: Thanks very much.....your ride suggestions have got me thinking the hunch about riding the SLC area(within 60 miles in any direction ) will provide miles upon miles of riding. PedalFaraway...thanks for putting it in a day by day format.....any suggestions on a place to rent a bike for the full week or so...right now riding a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 29 but last time i visited Fruita and Moab got recommendations for a shop in each town that worked out really good..... i do usually need an XL frame size....
Just to put it in perspective, unless you are Mark Weir or someone like that, Pedalfaraways itinerary will likely kill you. All great trails though.
errrrr ....

definetly not Mark Weir....not even Tinker Juarez....but you got me laughing ....do appreciate the perspective.....
Make sure to post up again when your trip nears. I'm sure you'll have plenty of volunteers for guides.
Thanks....

Just starting to test the water with a few friends....July 12th looking to be the optimal time right now.

Still looking for any other advice some might have in regards to how to set up the riding days ...i.e. similar to PedalFaraways take on it...day by day. Also need advice on where to rent bikes. Another thing that hit a chord with me was the suggestion to do a morning ride and a late day ride to take advantage of scenery and the time.

Thanks again for the suggestions and advice.
Great suggestions so far, I agree the Crest is a must ride and that time of the year it's a nice high elevation so it should be cool.

I would add on the Flying Dog trail in the Glenwild area just outside of Park City. When ridden counterclockwise, it's a short brutal climb to miles of blissful sweeping downhill. Tack on a lap or two in Bob's Basin "dh" area and you've got a great ride. One of my favorite in the state.

If you haven't checked out www.utahmountainbiking.com they have ride reports and a lightly used forum full of information.
