Hey everyone,

I haven't really posted on here before, so first of all, hello! I am a cyclist living on the front range (Lakewood) and I mostly ride mtb as well as some single-speed (commuting to work).

I work for a non-profit youth mentoring organization that hosts a bicycle building and repair group that works with kids in our community. We have 12 week groups that help to teach kids how to work on bikes. For the first six weeks we give them a bike to work on that we then donate to a local organization that gives the bikes to ex-inmates for transportation to help them keep a job, and for the last six weeks the kids work on a bike that they choose, tearing it completely apart and rebuilding it. At the end of the program, they get to keep it.

This is a great opportunity to do some volunteering in the down time of the winter months centered around a bicycle activity, at the same time bettering the community. Our next group will more than likely start around the 3rd week of January. We run our group at a full-service community bike shop (the place is great!) that allows us to have an unlimited access to bike-specific tools. If you love to work on bikes, would like to learn more about bike repair for yourself, and are interested in working with kids (ages 10-17), I'd love to hear from you. You do not need any previous bike repair experience!

Please note that due to the liability of working with kids, a background check would be performed before participating in the group - this is for everyone's safety.

Please PM me if you would like to receive more information and learn how to get involved! We are in real need for volunteers. What better way to help out the community than through bicycles?

Also, looking forward to being apart of this great forum!

Cheers:)

Dave

Here are some pictures of the group from sessions past. We wanted to use some wisdom and discretion in our selection of the photos out of respect for the participants, so they don't really show a lot.

Thanks everyone for the interest. There is still lots of time between now and January so that means plenty of time to get in and get the process started so you can be ready to go by the start of the next group.

Again, thanks!
