OK the Volunteers for Outdoor California trailworking event for Coe's Jim Donnelly Trail has been off-again on-again so many times (and with too much controversy) it needs a fresh start!

Things are starting to look better for the JDT; stay tuned!

Here's the old threads: https://forums.mtbr.com/california-norcal/vo-fo-coe-psa-772573.html and https://forums.mtbr.com/california-norcal/jim-donnelly-enters-rehab-778706.html

Barring an asteroid hitting the earth this Volunteers for Outdoor California event will be happening this weekend; sign up here: Volunteers for Outdoor California (it's free!)

Did I mention free dinner and free beer for those working a full day on Saturday!?!?

I asked if I could drive out and do MTB patrols for BCW and was sort-of rebuffed. I've got the day off Friday and was sort of thinking of changing my plans and hanging around with the VoCal folks. Indecisive much? Yup.

Please chime in with Friday (in particular) plans.

Saturday I have to be in Gilroy showered and dressed by 5pm for a charity event under penalty of slow death by pissed-off-wife.

Friday it's byob...

No beer Friday night? Boo.

...and not much goes on then anyway. Mostly stuff internal to VOCal; crew leader orientation, kitchen set-up, etc. No trail work on Friday.

I'll be there only to help them get their potable water supply filled up.

The "main event" is certainly on Saturday with Sunday being a half-effort. You could certainly do Saturday's full trail work session; do your Gilroy charity; return wife to castle; return to VOCal's party. Perhaps wife could be your DD?

From VOCal's schedule:

Friday
5pm - Registration and camping opens
Saturday
7:30am - Registration, light breakfast, and lunch prep begin.
8am - Morning greeting, announcements, stretching and safety talk. Project begins.
12:30pm - Break for lunch on trail.
3:30pm - Head back to camp.
4pm - Drinks, appetizers and socializing. Showers available.
6:15pm - Dinner and entertainment.
Sunday
8am - Registration, hot breakfast, and lunch prep.
8:30am - Morning greeting, announcements, stretching and safety talk. Project begins.
11:30am - Break for lunch on trail.
1:30pm - Head back to camp to pack gear and truck.
2pm - Celebrate the work and say goodbyes.

Charity event is 5-10pm, so I doubt much of the party will be happening after I got back.

Are you camping Friday night?

Free Beer Tomorrow

El Gatoctoberfest is on the menu.

Beers | Los Gatos Brewing Company, Los Gatos

This amber hued lager has a toasted caramel nose. The body is medium displaying a malt sweetness balanced by soft hop bitterness. 5.5 ABV
Hops: Hallertau & Tettnanger

It's a very good brew! IPA lovin' Sorcerer approves for sure. We've selected this variety of ale because not everyone is into the IPA thing.

Props to LGB for the donation.

Wheat Beer: Franzikaner Style Hefeweisen

Beers \ The Brewmaster

Kent Wheat, a native Californian, active in the field of beer making for over fifteen years, and professionally for nine years.

His interest in both the art and science of brewing led him to complete the American Brewer’s Guild’s Craftbrewers Apprenticeship Program in Vermont

Should you see him in the brewery (he’s the one wearing the galoshes!), don’t hesitate to visit with him and ask about the brewing process, and of course, the beer!

The Event T-Shirt

Everyone who works on the JDT past and present, will get one of these fine shirts:

Originally the shirt was going to have the event date on them. Then as the event was cancelled due to weather, Pliebenberg came up with the idea of using Roman Numerals for 2012, as the commemorative date. Good move!

It's been my desire to have shirts to give out specific to trail work and to all the volunteers who have helped out over the years. This is that shirt. Those of you who here who have come to help out at Coe, and I know who you are, will need to have one of these. Thanks for all the hard work and fun times!

These shirts are made from a synthetic technical fabric. We'll get some better photos at the event of course.

Why is the trail closed on Friday if registration is not until 5pm? I had planned on riding there Friday morning. Will that be OK?

I'm diggin' the shirt (pun intended). Definitely a good idea to go with the tech fabric instead of cotton. Can't wait to see the results of the VOCAL work.

These VOCal events are awesome. Had the pleasure of joining one of their events at OHM Trail a few years back. I wish I could get away for even a half day this weekend but alas, once again it's not in the cards. Have fun, everyone and thanks for the hard work!

Somewhere down on the checklist...

...DPR staff needed to "tight flag" the trail route to be worked by VOCal; this was to be done on Tuesday but that team had to cancel at the last moment so a different team came out yesterday---some photos:
<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260009.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260009.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Jim and Tim from the Monterey District get started from the very top. Tim had never been to the JDT before and Jim had never been this far up.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260010.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260010.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Their alignment was close to but not exactly in line with where the "volunteer" alignment was located.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260011.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260011.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Sorcerer catches up as rain is threatening.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260008.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260008.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
A pocket gopher was working on the JDT; seemingly oblivious to our presence.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260013.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260013.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
A pack string came up the trail as the rain started.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260029.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260029.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
We stood aside to let them past; they were heading to Coit Lake for some weekend fishing.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260032.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260032.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
A somewhat wet Tim uses a clinometer to verify the grade; this was done at 10' intervals along the entire VOCal work zone.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260040.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260040.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
The trail bench is only about 6" wide in this section of steep side slope; this experienced string had no trouble whatsoever traversing it. The "has got to be 4' wide all the way" requirement is once again called into doubt.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260046.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260046.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Sorcerer's waterproof camcorder was perfect for catching the action.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4260007.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4260007.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
The fully-bermed "Canary Corner" always gets the attention of the DPR.

Beer is Now IPA

Breaking News:

We have a keg of IPA now. Hop-heads rejoice!!!

Similar to our Pale Ale, but with hops galore! This ale displays floral, citrus, earthy notes. Backed by a smooth maltiness.

Hops: Cascade, Willamette, Centennial & Galena

TahoeBC:

There should be room...Truly though, we will have a lot of cars in there on Saturday. We expect 80 volunteers, so go from there. Since there BCW there will be fewer of the regular visitors offsetting some of the traffic.

So far so good...

The set-up day for VOCal went well; I was very impressed with their organization---much like a small army descending on Coe. I went up the trail with the early-arrival crew leaders for a late afternoon orientation:
<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4270007.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4270007.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Grass was nearly waist-high in the upper meadows.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4270010.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4270010.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
We paused at the top for a tick inspection.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4270012.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4270012.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
For some reason Tim the DPR guy had the most ticks so there was a some primate-style mutual grooming going on.

BTW; the IPA donated by the Los Gatos Brewing Co passed our acceptance test with flying colors!

Individual teams have safety talks before picking up their tools.

Some teams got to work in the shade.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4280035.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4280035.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Others worked in the sun; the day's temperature was pleasant though.

Here's a time lapse of the hike up and of the work in the area of the above photo:

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4280037.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4280037.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
I had to hike back down to the PRA tool locker to get a tire pump for a wheelbarrow flat; I snapped this photo of the HH parking lot where VOCal was camped.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4280056.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4280056.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Having completed their section; the 1st team leap-frogs the 5th(?)

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4280114.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4280114.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
This photo fairly represents the soil types encountered, some rock, some dirt.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4280098.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4280098.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
A lot of wheelbarrow work was required in sensitive areas (near creeks) where the spoils couldn't just be thrown down the hill.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4280110.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4280110.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
The Sorcerer digs some bench.

Not every area required the wheelbarrow.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/?action=view&current=P4280123.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/VOCal%20MMXII/P4280123.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Somewhat later the same day VOCal offered up a great chicken curry dinner; accompanied by the fine IPA from Los Gatos Brewing.

<a href="https://s1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/?action=view&current=P4280115.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b426/pliebenberg/Henry%20W%20Coe/Jim%20Donnelly%20Trail/VOCal%20April%202012/P4280115.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
After most of the tools were safely put away special people enjoyed special libations.
