first of all have you tried the software supplied with the camera,,easy edit software, this is very basic and easy to use, and will give you a general idea of whats involved in editing,
the 2 you mentioned are pretty good, my brother has used powerdirector and really liked it, it's userfriendly so quite easy to use, and it has quite a few functions, so you can clip and crop add titles and back gound music ect.
i have 2 contours hd 720 and the 1080p,,, i use sony vegas platinum 9. this is a great software, but it doesnt recognise the sound of the mov files, you have to convert them to mp4, there is supposed to be a fix for this problem on the sony website but i have never been able to get it to work, i also hear that the new version of vegas, sony vegas10 doesnt have this problem, overall the software is great and real easy to use, and depending on your pc's spec its a fast software to use,
to be honest there are lots of editing software out there now, and they all pretty much do the same thing, so what ever you buy you wont be dissapointed, the only bit of advice i will give would be, look at buying somthing more middle to top end as you can do more with it, if you buy a basic software for say 30-50 quid then you will be limited to what you can do, and as your editing skills progress you will find your self being held back by your software,
look on you tube mate there are lots of great reviews and tutorials on all the various softwares available. do some research and decide whats best for you, there are also lots of free demos available.
do you have a good spec computer, your gonna need a pretty fast processor and lots of memory for high def vid editing,
