Hi Gentlemen,

My wife (a Navy veteran - 22 years) is moving back from Amarillo to San Diego and is trying to sell everything in her apartment and move home by herself. She has her mtb with her but no bike rack and I was wondering if anyone has a bike rack they're not using and would like to sell for cheap or donate to the cause to help her get her bike home and free up space inside her little SUV for all of her other personal items. She's got a 2" receiver on her car.

She's leaving Texas a few days before Christmas. Please let me know if anyone has any leads on anything. I have searched Craigslist. She has an older Giant Trance.

EDIT - we're trying to do this on a budget. Problem is, although I have an older Thule sitting in the garage, it doesn't help being 1100 miles away. So this rack would be used for two days and as such, we're really trying to do this on the cheap. If someone donates one I'll make 100% sure it gets into another vets hands. I wouldn't sell it for any profit, that's just wrong.

You can send me a message on here if that's possible.

Thanks,

Mike

You're the man and I'll buy you a beer if you ever make it to San Diego, or if I ever get back to DFW (aunt lives in Allen) but her car doesn't have roof rails. I am humbled by the offer. You're a good man, did you ever serve? If so, thank you in advance.

Unless she is driving the entire distance without and overnight stop, having a bike on a rack is a good way to get it stolen. I shipped a bike a couple weeks ago in a bike box using FedEx and it was less than $100.

Curious as to why you are not bothering to help her with the move?

So Cal RX: Thank you very much. A quote I think is pretty good is this one - "And the truth is that all veterans pay with their lives. Some pay all at once, while others pay over a lifetime."

ShaleBreaker: I'll check into Harbor Freight, thank you for the tip. Ideally she can get rid of everything except computer and personal stuff and stuff her bike inside the car for exactly the reason Calsun said. We're extremely sensitive to stuff being stolen and take every precaution we can. She will be staying in a secure location at the halfway point, but the bike will still be stored inside that night regardless.

Calsun: I would drive out there, load up everything and move her back, but we did the math on everything she bought for her apartment and it's not really worth the
~$1600 it would cost me to drive there and back in my truck with hotels. I have driven there twice over the last 8 months, but we knew TX was a temporary situation. She moved there to get her foot in the door in a very specific job and was able to secure the same job here in SD so she's returning.... it was the plan all along. So we cheaply furnished her apartment just to get through however long it was that she had to be there before she could secure the work back here. We have a house here, so we don't have any need for the stuff she has in TX really. If anyone wants a good deal on some essentially brand new things hit me up and I can put you in touch with her. She's got about two weeks to sell the last couple things, washer/dryer, couch, 8 month old memory foam mattress, bed frame, nightstand set and matching TV table and some kitchenware.

Again, thank you all. We appreciate it.

A one way flight from San Diego to Amarillo costs less than $500 and on Dec 24 it is $332 plus taxes. If you fly there the Thule could be checked in as luggage, much like a baby stroller. If she spend the night at a hotel but to park where car can be seen from the lobby and to bring the bike into the hotel room. There are motion detecting alarms that are controlled with a remote that sell for less than $20.

I do understand about moving. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake badly damaged my house I moved 12 times in the following 2 years. I made a major move earlier in the year from Dallas and the month of the quake my father died and my divorce was initiated and my business inventory was destroyed which put me out of business. After that I felt I could endure anything even if I was having to start over with only my truck and my clothes, much as I had when I graduated 20 years earlier from university.

Calsun - trying to do this on the cheap and although flying is cheaper than driving, I would take up space in her car which I don't think we have anyway with how we're planning to pack her car. Plus we've got dogs here and nobody to care for them if I were to leave town. So, they go everywhere with me. I work hard so my dogs can have a good life haha.

What did you do for work that your inventory got destroyed?
