Very confused and ignorant new bike buyer

Hey All,

I sure hope some of you can help me make a good decision. The last time I bought a new bike was back in 1978 when I purchased a motobecane grand jubilee (which was just stolen two weeks ago). So needless to say a lot has changed since then. I have been doing some research but there is so much new tech stuff. Anyway, my 17 year old and I will be sharing this bike. I probably will only be doing moderate trail stuff and I am sure he will be a little more hardcore as time goes on. We are both around 5 foot 9 and around 160 lbs. (His is all muscle and we won't say what mine is;-)). We are limited budget wise to no more than $600. Here are some bikes we have been considering:

Fuji Nevada 1.0 (2009) - $475
Giant Yukon (disc) (2009?) - $540 (have to purchase out of my state)
Gary Fischer Wahoo (disc) - $600 (have to purchase out of my state)
Trek 4300 (disc) - $600

These all seem to have comparable equipment which makes it very difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

the best advice that i can give you is for both of ya'll to go and ride them! and whichever one fits ya'll best to get that one. also make sure you like the bike shop that you get it from. i will say this i have the gary fisher mako and i love it! the lifetime warranty on the frame is a plus too. Trek and Gary Fisher have lifetime warranty's on the frame if that helps any lol which with how long you keep your bikes you might want to look into that haha
I'm a fan of Gary Fisher and I've ridden the Wahoo, and 4300. The wahoo is the better ride IMO.
imo the 4300 is a better ride hope that helped..hehehe
guess im the only broke on that had to settle with the mako lol i hate being in college and saving for a wedding and not being able to afford anything right now
i just bought my 2010 trek 4300 disk for 580.00 2 days ago. but i would say go to the bike shop and take them each for a ride. i rode a gary fisher and the trek 4300 disk and the trek felt better for me, but everybodys diffrent.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I went out today and test rode a couple of bikes the Cannondale F7 and the Specialized Hardrock sport disc. Unfortunately the LBS that has the Wahoo and the Trek 4300 do not allow demo rides except in their small store so that didn't help much. Of the ones I was able to ride the Hardrock had the best "feel." I hope to go Monday and check out the Fuji.

jrherald420, I have a question for you. What was the difference if any between the 2009 and 2010 Trek 4300? You have me wondering if I should wait for the 2010 models.

Thanks for any in put.
the 2010 has a little bit diffrent stuff than the 2009. but the 2010 has diffrent paint than the 09's do. heres the comparisons from the 2009 2009 Trek
and what i found on the 2010 2010 Trek keep in mind the only info on the 2010 i found was this site from the UK. Trek doesnt even have any info on the 2010's on there site yet.

Trek still releases there stuff in Janurary. So the 2010 stuff won't be on the web site until the end of the year. Or at least they did around here.
check craigslist and get a used one, get a good deal on a year or two old bike, i just sold my 07 specialized hardrock with upgrades including discs for $380, and i bought a 05 Giant NRS with xt, disc everything for $425

so i take it they sell there 2010 bikes before hand then....lol how else would i have one!!
There are very few if any substantive changes on Trek's 3- and 4-series bikes each year, so get an 09 and ask for a last-year's-model discount unless you absolutely love a 2010's paint. I got a great deal on an 04 Trek 6500 which I liked more then the 05 with its nasty silver-grey paint and dodgy Slate fork!
i asked if there was a discount for the 2009 model and there wasnt since the 2010 is now more than last years model....oh well.
