yes it can.... have v-brakes on my Cannondale that I originally had cantilevers on.

Levers are the bigger consideration, as the mounts are the same but not the pull ratio of the levers....

Agreed!

I replaced my front canti's with v-brakes w/o problem. But the brake lever isn't right.

I got a set of Tekro MT 2.1 levers ($20), which can be adjusted for use with either v-brakes or canti's (or U-brakes). I have U-brakes on the back (1985 Ritchey).

Left brake lever is set one way, the right is set the other. Brake balance is fine w/this setup. When I get back on the Ritchey after riding my Epic, I don't notice any issues.
