The trick is no one except the bike's owner knows it's not your bike. And they're out there in broad daylight, maybe you just lost your key? People would be more suspicious if it were the middle of the night.

They probably still wouldn't do anything.

If you saw someone cutting open a door knob of a house or breaking a window to get in a car, it would look pretty odd. It was pretty obvious something was going on but most people probably think, "Not my concern."

Replacing a window or a door knob is a much bigger pain than buying a new cheap bike lock. Even then, if I saw someone trying to jimmy their front door open, I would guess it was the owner, because if they were breaking in, they'd go around back, right?

I did once break a window to my own house to get in. It was 14 degrees out and a mile and a half walk to the neighbors.
