I have a trek 3700 that I got new about 21/2 yrs ago. It is just like it was when I bought it. I am not a 'serious' mt biker. My son is 15 and does Jr XC Races locally. I pretty much ride trails with him to help loose weight, and also to keep in shape...plus its something to do together. Our local trails were we go are decent XC trails...nothing extreem.

Now My bike is starting to show some wear and tear. I dont have a lot to spend on a bike right now. I am trying to decide if the base of the 3700 is worth working around and upgrading, or if I am better off starting buying something else entirely. I prob only have about $700.00 to work with on the high end.

Any thoughts or ideas?

What sort of wear and tear are we talking about? A few dings here and then and time for a new chain/cassette/brake pads? Or something more serious?

I would probably stick with your current frame a while longer, it is good enough to justify replacing consumables but if you wanna do lots of upgrades you will very quickly spend more than the bike is worth ...

Allot depends on where the problems exist, being that you havent riden the bike much it may just need a good tune and service. Possibly new cables and housing maybe tires an tubes then walla your back to the same original bike for about $150 which is about what it's worth.

Or you can pre order something like a Ibex Trophy. :D

i was in the same position but instead of buying a new bike i bought parts. You would probably be best served by simply upgrading the things that are causing you problems. for what you are able to spend, with careful shopping, youll be able to get better components for the most part than what will come on a bike in that price range. i have a 3700 that i upgraded and im more than happy with it.

main thing that I see right now is teh rear cassett needs replaced, and yeah things need tuned up etc. I think given what I am hearing, I will tune this one up, clean it up....have it really gone through well, and save for a bigger upgrade to a nice 29" bike next year etc.

Thanks.
