Upgrade Question?

I want to upgrade my rear derailleur for my Ironhorse warrior. I have Shimano trigger shifter I believe they are "ST". I also have an 8 speed cassette. I was looking at getting the Shimano XT or LX. My main question is would either of these work for my bike & shifter, or would one be better & operate better then the other.
