Underwhelmed with magura mdr p 220mm

I bought a magura mdr p 220mm that replaced a 220mm sram centerline rotor that I though would be a upgrade but so far it’s been a downgrade

I haven’t had a chance to try the new rotor on the trail yet. But the sram 220mm centerline bite harder immediately.

I’m hoping the magura mdr p just needs a break in period? But if not why could it be weaker at braking. The sram had Instant braking Power on tap and the mdr kinda takes a while to even brake.

brakes are mt7’s.

Contaminated pads, rotor not bedded in with pad material (obvious reason for weaker braking). Wrong pads (organic instead of sintered). That’s really about it. I have the magura 220 and it’s a decent step up from 200-ish rotors. It’s made of steel…so it’s got to be one of the issues above.

So you replaced a 220mm rotor with another 220mm rotor expecting an upgrade.

What exactly were you visualizing as an upgrade? What was your concern with the original 220mm rotor?

OP, since you didn't mention it, and the rotor is brand new, my money is on improper (or complete lack of) bedding in. Whenever you change rotors or pads, you should rebed them.

I had 200mm actually sram centerline in the back and 220mm sram centerline on my previous Capra

the 200mm sram centerline I replaced felt better than this magura 220mm that replaced it and the 220mm sram centerline felt better than both

the sram rotors bite almost immediately and the magura one takes a while to bite

So this is on a different bike now that you transferred the brakes from your previous Capra to the new frame? Or is it a completely different brakeset?

Switching from one rotor to another of equal size is not going to be a performance gain ( all things being equal - same rotor diameter/thickness, good quality brand etc)

So your original post where you say you were looking for an upgrade I will ask again:

What exactly were you visualizing as an upgrade? What was your concern with the original 220mm rotor?

As others have said clean the rotor and pads of contaminants. Bed pads properly.

I was under the assumption it was 2mm so better braking power heat management but didn’t realize the 220mm sram centerline is 2mm as well.

brakes are the same magura mt7
Bed the brakes in correctly then judge the changes you made.
