got rim strips from my LBS. i think they are too narrow. i have bontrager rhythm 29er rims that i think are wider than normal rims. when i snapped in the rim strips one side has a small gap between the rim and the rim strip. this seems wrong to me. i thought it should go as wide as the entire rim. can anyone confirm?

Yes, you have the wrong rim strip. It should look like part of the rim when installed--bead hook to bead hook.

And remove the old blue rim strip before you install the correct one.

Yep, wrong one. They got you the asymmetric rim strip, likely part # 400337 for the RXL wheel. What you need for the Rhythm is the 406892 symmetric rim strip.

And a Shiggy noted, pull the blue rim strip out before you install the TLR strip or it won't seat properly in the rim.

Just say you need the Rhythm Symmetric 29. The part number has changed in the past. No need to confuse new/old stock.
