Triple Crankset Conversion Questions

1. Does the middle ring go behind or on top of the crank arm? Behind

2. Do I need a bashguard? If so, would grinding off the teeth on the big ring work? grinding off the teeth will work. Has worked for me and its a cheap fix. Or, you can buy the shorter chainring bolts for not having the bashguard.

3. If I did need a bashguard, would shortening the chainring bolts be a bad idea? I would just get new chainring bolts. New, fresh ones.

Use a bench grinder to grind off the teeth.

Personally, I leave the teeth. They dig in to large logs very nicely.

Just a matter of preference.

Yeah, and they dig into flesh quite well too. But if that is your preference??? Check the price of a bashguard and the price of a large chain ring. Its not a huge difference but pennies make dollars. That is of course, if you are saving your parts to possibly go back to gears.

Save yourself some grinding time. Snap the teeth off with a pair of electrician's pliers, then grind off whatever remains. If your ring is anything other than aluminum, all bets are off.

The chain should protect the ring. Just get the steel Truvativ dual hex head bolts for use with a single/double ring. They come with washers that will space properly for use with a single ring, or remove them and run a bash. Plus they're pretty cheap.

True about the chain part. If you really want a bashguard look at the BBG Bashguards. They are both nice AND cheap.

I have bent chain rings on my SS while hoping over logs and rocks without a bash guard. The chain will save you from marring up the teeth of your single ring, but bending is more the concern here IMO.
