I guess everyone is so busy riding there is no time to let us working folk in on trail conditions. It should be pretty dry out there by now. I'm thinking about checking out TR after work. Might squeeze one ride in before it gets wet again. If its still muddy I can head up to Lucky Peak on the the GB and come back to Columbia Village via Bonneville Point.

Based on what I saw this weekend, the trails between 8th Street and Mountain Cove road (i.e., the connector, freeway, Hulls Gulch, Sidewinder, Red Sands, etc...) are the driest I've ever seen them in mid-winter. The Reserve trails are also mostly dry, but I would still avoid the shady sections of, say, Cottonwood Creek, Mtn Cove trail, Shane's loop, as those are still sort of mucky. Bucktail has some impressive ruts from people riding it when it was really muddy, but it was pretty dry on Sunday.

I have no idea of the condition of the TR trails - I haven't been out on those in a couple of weeks, and not when it's been above freezing yet. My guess, based on past experience, is that you'll find assorted patches of mud on TR still, since it's the last to dry out usually.

I went yesterday morning and it is starting to get soft. I did crestline sidewinder up to bobs. The connector from the motorcycle to bobs is probably a mess right now. It was getting soft and my guess is its totally thawed by now. Bobs was good except for the creek was high and resembled a glacier. Everywhere else was ok, a couple of mucky spots but nothing to bad.

I took my dog for a walk on the Castle Rock trails this morning. Trails were soft, but not gooey at 6:30 AM. I got the impression that they would be a bit slimy once the sun came up.

Rode Three Bears to Shane's on Saturday around noon. Most parts were dry. One section of lower Shane's still had snow on it. That 75-yard section is probably pretty ugly now that the temps are up, but the rest should be great.

6:45 PM Tuesday trail report: slop. I take back what I said above. I don't know what happened out there since Sunday mid-day, but it was downright soggy tonight where it had been hardpacked and barely damp on Sunday. I think the warmer temp and lack of freezing nights have allowed deeper layers of soil to thaw. All I can say is it's back to the running shoes and road bike for me.

Ditto! Just when I was starting to think a month without precip would make for better riding. Shamefully sloppy out there. The best I could do in spots was try to ride down some of the higher ridges on the ruts... :nono: :madman:

Slop

Did not even make it to TR. It is so sloppy around my hood I just came home and rinsed the bike off then hung it in the garage. The Owyhees are the only unfrozen rides I'll do til spring.

No Solid Ground

what's the latest time I can ride solid ground?
Looks like we need to stay off the foothills trails for awhile. I think Rocky Canyon Rd. will also be sloppy and very hard on the drive train for a few weeks. Need to find a couch to surf in AZ.

My route

Geoff & Chris --- what'd you guys try to ride tonight?
Chickadee - very sloppy on the steep section closest to 8th street.
Hulls Gulch - wet sand, a few dry & hardpacked sections, and some mud.
Hulls Ridge to the Moto Parking lot - mostly dry down low, wet closer to the parking lot.
Corrals to the top of Bob's: soft closer to 8th street, wet sand/dirt closer to Bobs.
Bob's: Drier up top, REALLY muddy with wide, half-frozen stream crossings at the bottom.

I didn't have much mud on my tires or bike when I was done, but more than I would prefer. I'm sure the difference between last week, when the trails were great, and last night (when it sucked) was that the temps staying over freezing the last few nights has let the lower soil levels of the trails thaw, releasing their moisture into the upper levels that were drying last week, once again turning the trails to muck. Goes to show you never know. Dry winter weather doesn't really dry the trails - only warm, dry weather does.

And flip - yes, we all hate you. :p

EP covered it all, but I'll add that even Crestline, that was rideable last week, was too muddy to ride in places last night. Kestrel wasn't bad until the last 40yds, surprise, surprise... but I think it's time to wait, pray for wind, sun and more wind... that seems to be what it takes to dry the trails out. Even Hulls that used to be quite rideable when temps were in the 30's was a sloppy mudfest about 1/4 of the way in the middle.

I rode this morning at 8. Not a soul in sight. The temps were so nice, and the ground was firm. I spent just over an hour in the military reserve and the only thing that sucked was all the ruts. I just did my part to smooth them out.

I rode this morning at 8 too, on my 7 inch travel rig. Ground was very firm. A few crumbs, but no ruts or mud to speak of. Temps hovered around a comfy 68 degrees and no wind. Way too many people, though.

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D
