Hello everyone,

I would like to get your opinion in which bike is better as I am a complete noob and would like your experience and knowledge to help me in purchasing the right bike. I have 2 bikes in mind, 2022 Marlin 5 MTB vs Mammoth Alpine MTB . Which bike do you recommend? I am just going to be using this to bike around the city and maybe some trails if possible. From my research I found the parts in Mammoth Alpine MTB to be better better but I could be mistaken. thanks

I've never heard of Mammoth but don't go by me because there may be a lot of brands I haven't heard of. I definitely like the looks of the Trek better if that means anything. I will agree that the Mammoth has Deore drivetrain vs Altus on the Trek so it should be better in theory. Everything else seems to be tit-for-tat. Something else that might make a difference is would you rather have 1x10 or is 2x8 OK?
Both are limited in offroad capability by the fork and the skinny rims. They'll be fine for bike paths and smooth trails.

I am purely buying it because of the components being better in Mammoth vs Trek. Hoping it translates that in real life.
All bikes in that category are generally the same. There really isn't a "better" bike out there in the starter category. Only what works for how you ride. Just make sure it's a proper fit before you purchase.
The Mammoth has better drivetrain. The 1x10 Deore is a level up from the 2x8 Altus and will make the bike nicer to ride and easier to maintain.

It has a slightly better specced fork too with front thru axle and larger stanchions and more travel which should make it a bit stiffer and more capable but in reality it doesn't matter because the fork isn't really designed for terrain where that matters. It will probably be slightly better on trails though.

The Trek will be easier to sell in the future as it has a brand name behind it.

As mentioned, all bikes in this price bracket are pretty similar really and its probably not going to make a huge difference.
