I just picked up a hardly-used Trek Farley 9.6. The rear is not holding air. I was thinking of redoing the tape. I Have used Fatty Strippers but don't want to this time. Have you guys had any luck with the Sun Ringle stuff or maybe something else? I THINK the previous owner may have over-inflated the tires a bit, since the black nylon tape has been pushed out through the rim more than I'd expect. I can redo using the same stuff or something else if you guys have had good luck with it? Whiskey? Orange Seal?

Oh, wheels are the Sun Ringle Mulefut 80s.

I'd use Whisky.

Thanks Mike! I'll do that. Is the SR black tape okay? I wish they had the a 27.5 version of the Bontrager Jackalope rims instead of these Sun Ringles. I bought two of the 26" versions from you a little while ago.

@Flyer I'm assuming you're talking about the rim band that goes on before the tubeless tape. The 'blow through' is normal, and shows up on all of those bikes as they are shipped from the manufacturer (with tubes). If you're trying to save a few bucks, I've had decent results simply flipping it around--though that does make it more difficult to get good tape adhesion.

The easiest taping is achieved with a new band. Even with a brand new band/tubeless tape, you're going to see a bit of stretch through the holes.

Tubeless tape is tubeless tape (sort of). The most important thing is that it is wide enough to cover the rim amply, which the Sun Ringle tape just ever so barely achieves. Try to find tape that is actual 80mm wide.

Haven't used the SR tape.

I'll use 3M 8898 if it's all I can find, but the Whisky conforms better and has better adhesive, so it's my preference.

Regardless of which tape you use, it's mandatory to stick a tube in for a few hours at some higher-than-riding pressure to get the tape stuck down and the bubbles pushed out.

Thanks guys! I ordered two new 60mm bands since they are inexpensive, and 80mm Whisky tape. I'll definitely do the tube thing overnight at maybe 15 PSI. I appreciate the information!

Mike- my Farley has those oil slick colored hubs. They are probably some in-house inexpensive Bonty hubs. Any idea if they are any good? Pawl, I assume. I ask because it is hard to find good fatbike hubs and if these hubs are crap, I may just buy a nice set and keep them handy in case the stock ones crater in the winter, and I cannot find any hubs then.

These hubs are the same six-pawl Trek uses on the Farley nowadays anyway. They sort of look like Industry Nine hubs inside....6 pawls and tons of teeth to provide 108 points of engagement though I9 is 120, IIRC. I am hoping they are durable, unlike the Specialized fat hubs that cratered at a very high rate. I just don't want to be without a wheel in prime riding season this winter. If I find a DT350 or I9 hubset, I'll pick them up. Onyx is tempting too, for the silent coasting.
