Hi all.
I am looking forward to buying a new mountain bike and have narrowed the choices down to the Specialized Rockhopper and the Trek 4500 Disc models. They are both for around $700 at my local bike shop. I was just wondering what bike has better overall parts and which bike is the better of the two. I have test ridden both and I don't think I could go wrong with either, I just want to know what you guys think.

I would go with a Rockhopper. It's a better all around bike, and will still perform excellent on the trails. I have a '10 RH comp and can't complain.

You should be able to get a Trek 6000 2010 for about <800. Negotiate with the LBS

I second the suggestion to negotiate. You have nothing to lose, and you might find that he may be more eager to make a sale than he's letting on...

I'd go looking for something used. You can get a one hell of a used bike 700$.

I bought a new bike last year. I road both and ended up with the RH. I just liked the way it handled better.

Go ride both again...

And Yes don't be afraid to ask for a better price. The worst that can happen is a No...

I had the exactly the same question. I have been looking at those two same bikes. But I can't find anyone in that actually has Specialized Rockhopper stock for a test ride.

oh I've done that - but none of the austin,texas dealer have it in stock in a 19" or 21".

There is a dealer in San Marcos.. I think they have a 4500 trek but not sure about 19-21

I went into my LBS, Pauls cycling, and struck a super deal. I purchased a Specialized Rockhopper comp 29er new with a helmet for $800. Mainly because of a military discount. I get the bike tomorrow and can not wait to try it out!!
