Trance X 29 3 vs Liv Intrigue

2027 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  J-Bone
Hey collective wisdom. Looking at getting wifey into a full squish and the Liv Intrigue caught my eye. Then I found the trance x 29 3. See links below.

Both will be size small. She is about 5'3" to 5'4".

It seems I can order both on the site and get them at my local shop.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend having her try out some bikes and figure out which wheel size she prefers. My wife likes the rollover of 29" wheels but she's 5'7" to 5'8". She's on a medium Trance 29. Also, since this is your wife's first FS, is there a particular reason you're looking at that 140ish travel range?

Thanks for the feedback. Hard to get into bikes lately just to try them. But we'll try. I'm a huge 29 fan but I wonder if in size small it makes more sense to go 27.5. She sometimes rides my medium Ripmo AF and loves it.

I realize it may be a bit of over biking, but not a lot of options in that price range. Next best thung is the Ripley AF which would be 800 bucs more

What about the Trance 29 (not X)? Seems like a smart spec...Z2, DPS, Deore 12spd, etc.

I think the Liv has a lower stand over, just for women. Also, usually the Trance is slightly higher specced for the same money for some reason. Liv looks to have shorter reach and no flip chip?
Personally, I would go for the Trance, but only if it fit her well, otherwise the Liv.

Has she ridden a 29er before?
My wife is 5'7" tall and prefers her 27.5 over my 29er and they are very close in sizing.

She has. My medium Ripmo AF

Where a lot of women-specific brands use the same frames/geo as their unisex counterparts, Liv doesn't. Liv frames are completely different than Giants. For instance Liv bikes have a shorter reach. (16.3/16.7" in S for the Intrigue 29, 16.8/17.1" in S for the Trance X 29) The entire bike is almost an inch shorter. If this is a good thing is probably up to the individual, but for a woman on the shorter side I can see it being a good thing.

Also I used the numbers from the Intrigue 29 rather than the Intrigue that you posted a link to as it's a closer alternative size/geo-wise to the Trance X 29 3 that you posted and has the same adjustable geo that the Intrigue doesn't have, though it's $1k more.

I hear you. 1k more is out of budget. 27.5 intrigue is back in stock.

Update. Just ordered the Liv Intrigue!

A bit late but did you consider Polygon Siskiu T8? Looks like bikesonline have small and medium 27.5" in stock...

Ha. I know right. Yes. If we had unlimited funds that would be the way. Also if she gets more into riding I would also make the effort. Right now she only rides once a month or so.

Our situation was such that the ripmo was my primary bike and I med/large trek Fuel ex was my backup. When she rode with me I took the Trek and she the ripmo because the Trek was too big for her. Even the ripmo at medium was a touch big. Hence the new bike for her in small. I sold my Trek to get her this. If riding a bike sized for her gets her hooked more into riding we shall continue to upgrade.

yeah, money always gets in the way. My wife has been riding the same bike for about 15 years-just a trek commuter-weighs a metric ton. Just got her a specialized sirrus for cruising and fitness-world of difference between the old trek and new bike. Hopefully she'll get hooked with a cooler better riding bike.
I own the Trance 29 from '19 and love the ride. NX12 and fox make life pretty well on a bike.
