TRANCE - The Official thread, links, pics and info inside.

If you have a Trance please posts pics (action would be nice) and specs and any thing(s) you've had problems with/advice about stuff you've found out about them.

I thought I'd give this a shot since the Trance is becoming a very popular bike, maybe the admins will sticky it for easy access and reference. I'll go to the other threads on them and link back so everything's here, so check out the links below for previous discussion on the Trance. These are all I found, if you find more let me know and I'll add it to the list- (I've only gone through the GIANT forums, it will take time to search thriough the rest of the forums here, but I figure this will help anyone out who's looking for info on them..

Here is mine. I am 5'7, 170-175lbs. I ride the Medium 16" frame, i set the RP3 shock to about 180psi and the rebound about 4-5 clicks from the "fast" end, and mostly ride it on the medium setting. My bike as it is in the photo is about 31lbs bathroom scale weight.

I was sized right between a 16 and 18 inch frame size, but chose the 16 cause it is smaller and lighter and don't regret it. I also switched out my fork from a 21" crown height 130mm to a 19" 100mm travel and really love the more aggressive riding position. I would deffinatly reccomend a 100mm/4" travel shock, if you want more travel up front you probably need to move to a Reign.

Um... Only thing I need to really be happy is a lighter wheel/tire set. My Deore 475 hubs and 321 mavics are much to heavyweight for my taste! I am currently getting some DT Swiss 4.1d's on Hope XC's and going to run those tubeless with Panaracer Trailblasters. Should save 2-3 lbs I think.

Here's the Specs
-Grips - ODI YETI's
-Bar - Easton MonkeyLite Carbon - Uncut
-Stem - Ritchey Pro Adjustable Stem
-Fork - Manitou Minute 2:00
-Seatpost - Thomson
-Seat - Don't know, fits my butt and is old as all get out
-Brakes - Hayes HFX-9 - 6" rotors
-Shifters - Deore
-Derailuers - XT front and rear
-Cranks - Race face ride and OEM raceface BB
-Wheelset - Mavic 321 with Deore 475 Hubs
-Tires - Wire bead Panaracer Fire XC

Cool bike man.... In your place I'd change the 475 hubs for a set of 515's or 525's... the 475's have not seals and it's a pain to keep them running smooth requiring constant maintenance. From the 515's and up, Shimano stuff is basically maintenance free.

Lucky bastids... all of you on Trances..... :D

Nice bike, and same size as mine.

I'm about 5'8" and went for the 16" frame as well with a thompson layback post. It's feeling pretty good riding about town and down the odd set of steps etc. I'm about the same weight etc as yourself, so I'll try your settings out.

Got my fox vanilla Rs set to 100mm of travel, toying with the idea of moving them back up to 125mm, gonna try them in Glentress tomorrow at 100mm though.

Only things I'll be changing are the cables to nokons when I get the extension kit, and the front mech which the shop fitted as they only had Alivios in stock.

the way my XTR rear mech is set currently has it bashing off the chainstay, can I cure this with the B adjust screw or shoulf I use a chainstay protector to stop paint damage etc?

I had to sell my $3000 custom Haro Werks bike to pay off some bills so I had limited cash to spend on a new bike. I eventually went with the Trance 4 because it has an amazing framset and I could care less about derailleurs/shifters and stuff like that. The only downside are the brakes and fork, but I can honestly say its the nicest feeling bike i've ever ridden, even with V-brakes and a crap fork. I'm so stoked about it im already planning on uprading the fork and brakes. Im 5'9 and im riding the 18" and i've never had more fun riding a bike then this one.!

I would post pics but as is its stock and a tad ugly due to the parts haha

Though the frame is....so nice.

Guys thanks for posting up these first pics and the info and getting this thread rolling. Hopefully it will be a place that anyone interested in getting a Trance or who has one and wants info can come to find it.

Mars why don't you edit your post and ad the specs for that nice ride, doesn't look quite "stock"

Sorry to hear that man, at least you've now got a good start towards another great bike :D

Post 'em anyways, I'd like to see how the darker blue of the T4 frame looks.

Will be trying to get some decent pics of mine this weekend to post up - hopefully a few action shots would be nice. She's an almost stock T3 w/ changed stem & HB (Bontrager Race Lite 31.8), REBA SL fork(motion control rocxz) and crankset & BB - crappy a$$ RF RSX ISIS BB crapped out in about 3 weeks and had this old maybe Deore square taper BB and crankset around. Did a bit of switching over chainrings from the RF set that came with the bike and got the cheapo Shimano set down to around 1.5lbs instead of a hefty 2+lbs. Looking to upgrade to a XT Hollowtech external BB crankset as soon as I can afford it.

Finally got my 18"....wrong size???? UGH!

Ok, I waited 2 months for my 18" Trance 2. The shop folks insisted that I have too long of a torso for the 16", but now I'm not sure. I'm 5'8" (barely) with a 29.75 - 30" inseam. When I stand over the 18", I have very little, if any room. Basically, the bar is 'resting' against the...er...goods. :) I can lift the front end and there is about 1.5-2" of space, but the bar is pretty well jammed in my crotch.

When I stand over the 16" (A trance 3), I have lots of room. 3-4" of space under front tire when it is lifted (maybe more, i didn't measure exactly). Riding around on the 16" feels nimble, while the 18" feels "stable". I haven't started messing with stems, etc., but I'm a little nervous that I purchased the wrong bike. Am I going about the sizing the right way?

I've only been riding for about 4 years, so I'm not an expert in how the bike is 'supposed' to feel. I had a GF Kai-Tai hard tail first and it was a 15.5". It was small and kinda unstable at high speeds, but nimble as heck and fun. I then got a Sugar 3+ in a Medium (they have long top-tubes) and the bike never felt right. Always felt too big, but the shop guys thought I looked good on it.

I want to know if I'm all screwed up in the head and the 18" is the right bike, or if going with something that feels small and nimble is a good idea. I just dropped $2700, so I'm freakin out a bit :).

I'll post my pic and specs next....if I change anything, it would only be the size of the frame.

Here's what I did get...

Here's what I did buy....I may get the 16" depending on some more test rides and info gathered here...

All parts are stock trance 2 except the following:

XT Cassette
Easton Carbon Fiber Riser Bar
Crossmax XL Wheelset (paid an extra $309 w/ trade in of original wheels)

I dumped the rapid-rise too, but that was just a straight swap w/ XT. Also put on my Serfas ARC Dual Density Pro saddle, but not sure if that's an 'upgrade' from the WTB Rocket V (??? opinions welcome)

I got a new Pearl Bib ($90) and they tosssed in a T-shirt :). $2767 w/ taxes....

weight: 28.8lbs

anyway...we'll see about the frame size, but I think it looks good...

Nice bike Kiva, I tried to wangle a black frameset for myself but obviously failed  . Don't worry too much about the size, I think at 5'8" we're both in between sizes and can adjust either bikes cockpit to fit us. Keep us posted on what you do settle for.

18" may be good for you

In response to kiva's quesiton, here is what I think. I am 5 feet 75 inch tall and have a long torso, just like kiva.

I just bought a Trance 2 two days ago. Although I have been riding a VT with a 16.5 frame, I thought I want to try a bigger frame. So when I bought the Trance 2, I went for the 18" frame.

Before I bought the 18", I have tested riding on a 16". The LBS did not have a 18" for test ride.

I grabbed my bike on Friday's night. When I first rode on it, I felt it was a bit oversized. Questions came to my mind as to whether the 18" frame was too big for me.

However, after riding the bike for around 1 hour and 45 minutes on Sunday morning, I came to the conclusion that 18" is a good fit for me. The bike is stable and I feel very relaxed on it, even though that I have to lean a bit more forward than riding my 16.5" VT.

Just like Kiva, clearance between my ??? and the top tube is just around 1". One my VT, the clearance is around 2".

I will use my VT for free-riding. It is more nimble, which is good for rding on difficult terrain. However, for XC riding, I will use my Trance 2, which gives a much more stable feeling.

Hope that I can kiva's question.

frame.
Well I have only been riding a year and change so I'm less experienced, but I've tried to learn as much as I can in that little time. W/ my XL/22" T3 all I had to go on was my first bike- a 20" DB COIL- and it felt to small for me so I figured a bit more room would be good. I'm 6' 2 1/4" and I have about 2" clearance on mine.

Best thing I could advise you to do is take it for a nice long ride w/ a bit of everything in there and see how it feels -
Does it handle speed well (feel stable)?
Does it handle tight twisty stuff (can you manuvere it around easily)?
Does it feel good for a long ride of 2 hours (comfortable, no back ache, leg cramp etc)?

After this I figure you can make a better decission about which frame suits you and I'm sure that the bike shop will not quible about you exchanging the 18" for a 16" if the bike isn't right for you. Remember that fit is the most important thing on a bike, doesn't matter if you get it for a steal of adeal if it doesn't fit right it's gona give you aches and pains and maybe some medical bills.

BTW sweet ride, I too am longing after a set of CrossMax.

Well, my conclusion from comparing the geometry data from the website, is that for us guys right in the middle, it shouldn't make a LOT of difference.

The differences in Geometry (as published mind you, Giant might make the bikes not per specs given on their website).

Top Tube is 0.8 inches longer on the 18"
Wheel base is 0.9 inches longer for the 18"

So that should explain why the 18 would feel more stable, it is a little longer... but the differences are not that substantial and you could replicate the geometry with careful part choices e.g. a longer stem, layback seatpost, long fork.

I prefer the 16" myself, where I ride in Texas we have a fair amount of rocky ledges to assend and descend and I feel that I can come out of my riding position faster to deal with that terrain then I could with the "racier" cockpit position the 18" would put me in. Now if you look at my bike, you can tell I have the seatpost pretty high which is an indicator that I am at the upper size range for the 16"

terrain...

thanks for the input, folks. To state the obvious, that's exactly how I feel: between sizes. Quite aggravating :)

Most of the terrain I ride is technical rocky stuff (lava cap). Here are some examples of the type of stuff we ride:

https://www.chicomtnbikers.com/images/Larry_on_chute_6-14-05_001.JPG

https://www.chicomtnbikers.com/images/Down_at_Inspiration_Rock_6-14-05_013.JPG

can't say either one of those are me though :)....Of course, it's not *all* like that, but one MTB group used to call themselves the "lava pounders" and anybody riding a hard-tail usually gets a "wow, that's gotta be tough..."

I can't take the bike on a "real" ride, which is unfortunate. I did set up the 16" and took that around a bit and then hopped right on the 18". The difference wasn't as dramatic as I thought it might be, but was definitely there. Of the stats stated above, I'd agree with the TT and wheelbase lengths, but the standover height difference is more than that, IMO.

Anyway, I still don't know what I'm going to do. I think finding out on Monday just how long i'd have to wait for a 16" may influence my decision. It is nice to know that I won't really be messed up either way, but I just need to find out which I prefer.

I appreciate hearing of your experiences with sizing and eagerly anticipate further responses.

Thanks.

Rocky terrain

If you frequently ride that kind of rocky terrain, I think that you should choose a REIGN instead of a TRANCE. A 16" inch REIGN will perfectly suit your riding style.

I am not sure if TRANCE will be able to constantly take those relatively hard hits that those rocky terrain will produce.

excellent point. I actually was able to demo the reign and it was like steering a tank. Freakin' heavy as heck and I hated it. It was an 18, though, which may have played a role. If I was a "fast downhill" type of rider, I think I would agree with you more. However, I'm more of a climber and, at my age, coupled with a strong desire to not hurt myself, I don't tend to ride too fast downhill or go all bomber crazy.

I have found that I am happiest on something that climbs well and descends well-enough to suck up most of what I thrown at it.

Your comment will cause me to take a 2nd look at the reign, but the weight scares me a bit...i'm fat enough as it is..i don't need another 4 lbs to lug uphill :)

Thanks so much for your input...it is truly appreciated...

Nice J.King, wish I could get some action shots of myself - no luck this weekend with getting any. What's the specs on that rig? Only thing I can tell (I'm pretty sure at least :D ) is it's a custom build of the frameset using a RS fork - either REBA or SID.
