Looking for some tips on nutrition for long distance training. I have a friend who is planning on doing the Army 10 miler and she is worried about nutrition and her diabetes. She has a plan but it seems like she is experimenting with food. Is that normal? Does each persons body react differently to different food sources?

A lot depends on the type of diabetes she has and how it is managed. She would need to contact her doctor to find out what is best. People with diabetes are more sensitive to extreme physical exertion and heat. If your friend is on insulin, then she could run into an issue with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). What happens is the insulin that is taken lowers the blood sugar, then the demands of the body lowers it even further. The result can be death.

This is why she needs to talk to her doctor and develop a plan.
