La Costa is fun. Calavera is also in Carlsbad, but I've never been there. Heard it's a little hard to follow until you get it figured out. La Costa is pretty easy to follow, climb up, ride down, repeat.
I would ride La Costa. Calavera Lake is a small, highly impacted area with multiple trails, many of which have been deemed illegal. The legal ones are usually crowded.
Are you coming to vacation or visit friends and family in SoCal and want to bring your Bike and enjoy our year round riding weather? Where to ride, how to find trails, meet up with others, rent a bike, find the best shops, etc? I am going to compile a list here of all the best places to check...
@celler What do you like to ride in Prescott? I live there as well and came from Oceanside. I rode Calavera twice a week and HATED La Costa. I will agree that Calavera can be a maze and plenty of the area is technically illegal but it's enforced every 6-8 months for a couple days. It's not an issue to concern yourself with.
