I may be going to school out there next year, just wondering what the area (maybe within a 40 mile radius) has to offer.
Thanks for the help.

not a lot

Deer Grove in Palatine and Des Plaines River Trail are about it that's close to you.

If you double your radius to 80 miles:

Rock Cut in Rockford
Palos in Willow Springs
Kettle Moraine in Wis.
There are a few more

Let me characterize: The Des Plaines River Trail is a bike path, but a pretty one. Along the river, so mostly flat, but winding; limestone screenings, well maintained. The draw is that it runs all the way to the WI border. Most fun ridden very fast or at night. From Lake Forest, you are talking about a 60-mile round trip. Also is possible to ride south into the city on bike paths. And Palos and Kettle each about an hour away.

devils head in wisconsin has some okay stuff. kettle moraine is fun.

But you might like to try the Outback Trail at Imagination Glen http://www.outbacktrail.org.

I met some guys out there from the North Suburbs the other day and they said they preferred our trail to Palos Heights despite the longer drive. Try to visit at least once this year and be sure to check out our events calendar.

BTW, the best resource for locating Chicago area trails is at http://cobamtb.org. (They rate the Outback as a 5/5 star trail).
