trade in the heckler???

so i've got a heckler. it looks pretty beefy. i just don't know if i should get something wit a little more travel for the bigger hits like a bullit or a free. by bigger hits i mean double-stair sets to drops of bout 8 feet. sc says that you can only run a 152mm fork and i have this jr t sitting here. i don't want to destroy the bike doing stuff that is too much for it. is the bullit really that much beefier?? thoughts??

yeah the bullit is alot beefyer...but its not that beefy...SCs FR bikes tend to be rather nimble and light...solid and tough but not as beefy as other bikes...a VP-Free would go nicely...and so would a bullit but they tend to only have more rear travel thn be a hell of a alot beefyer...

but ive just confused my self so anyways yes they are beefyer...
That 6" on the Heckler...

May have at least as much to do with the head angle you're gonna end up with as well as potential frame damage. My fellow mechanic at the shop has a newer Heckler, and he just installed my '03 Firefly on it. After some test rides, you can tell that much taller of a fork is really going to start screwing up the handling. My Bullit with a Z150 on it sitting next to his really shows how much taller his bike is going to sit up. The axle/crown on a Z150 is tall, but there's not much else out there in the 6" range that's going to be much shorter. And if you put a (7"?) Jr.T on it, you'll have a rig that the boys at Orange County Choppers would be proud of. A Heckler is a great bike, but it's limited on how big a fork you can put on it. Unlike older Bullits that can easily be upgraded from 6" to 7" (and actually even 8"), the Heckler's swingarm is already at its max extension with a 7.875" shock. Bullits are very tough frames. The '03 & later models are even tougher--gussets and tubing mods. Anything can be broken, but the Bullit has as solid a reliability history as one could hope for. When you factor in the price and weight of a Bullit frame, it's downright impressive. Just don't ask about the color.

Could you please elaborate on this upgrade?

Thanks
the heckler weighs onlt 1 lb less than a bullit. i would be surprised if you can hurt your heckler. Look at Super T Klassen ffrom dropin, he was doin full 15 foot drop 35 gap road jumps! I wouldnt be afraid of throwing a 6 inch travel fork on there at all. Just make sure the parts you have are heavy enough too. how much do u weigh, and r u smooth.. but i think subconsciously, u r lookn for an excuse to get a VP Free ;) do what your pocket book can afford. the heckler is a sturdy rig. what size and year is it? im look for at least an 2003 large to build into a sub 30lb trail rig
Sure.

The original '99 Bullit had a 7.875" length by 2.25" stroke shock producing 6" of travel. The '03 models came with an 8.5" X 2.5" shock producing 7" of travel. Avy (& maybe others) makes a 9" X 3" shock which will produce 8" of travel. The Bullit has a decent amount of room for its swingarm before it maxes out and hits the seat tube of the frame. The Bullit also has a moveable shuttle at the front shock mount which lets you play with shock lengths and head angles. The shuttle is even removed on that 8" model and the shock directly bolted into the frame mount. I think that 8" Bullit mod is still available for viewing over on the Avalanche site. It kind of shows you how moving those shock lengths around on a Bullit can get you from 6--8 inches. All years of Bullits will allow these relatively easy modifications.

he did that on a heckler??? i had thought of getting a 03 sherman slider being that it's a little beefier that a single crown 6". my frame is a med, i weigh 165-70 and sometimes its like someone dropped a bag of bricks down the stairs. a vp would be nice ....... the whole thing was would it be wort it to spend more or will the hecky be strong enough. and i've tried the jr t and its a little too raked
Im looking on the Avy site for something about the Bullit mod, cant find anything.......any idea what it would be under?
Yep, it's gone.

They used to have a very detailed story and pics laying out the whole procedure. The guy that did it on his bike on the site warned that you even had to watch your saddle and post adjustments as the rear tire would buzz the rear of the saddle on severe bottom-outs. I guess Avy dropped the description to this mod in light of much better bikes being available for 8" travel needs. That description was on their site for quite awhile. I copied the description to paper but not on the computer, or I'd send it to you. The 7" mod is more than enough for a Bullit, though it can still be done with one of those 9" X 3" shocks.
Thats like an 8inch Heckler!
I run a Z-150 on my '04 Heckler and it rides sweet. I'm not doing any 15 footers but I'd say it gets some abuse. I'm 5'7" and about 160lbs. I've also got a 50mm RF Diabolus stem and w/ the Z-150 its slighty choppered out. Steering and overall control are very quick, responsive and stable. My only complaint is trying to make some tight uphill switch backs...but hey you can't have it all.

Get another bike. The Bullit is a good choice if you want to stay with SC. It is only a matter of time before you break your Heckler and good luck with your warranty. Not one of SC strong points.
get the bullit...you will love it's smoothnicity
