I'm doing the unofficial "MTBR M5100 1x11 Drive Train Conversion Challenge" and failing miserably. I ran into a big problem when I tried to install the RD-M5100-SGS derailleur with the 11-51 cassette. I am upgrading from a 3x10 setup on a 2013 Jamis Dragon if that's relevant.

There is no separation between the jockey wheel and the lower cog (even with B-screw full engaged). Like it literally is pushed into the cog and preventing the stop on the derailleur form sitting flush against the hanger stop.

Also there is a little notch on the derailleur by the top jockey that is nicking the bike frame.

I compared the new vs old derailleur and you can see that the new one's top jockey wheel extends out alot more than the old one. Also you see the notch that's hitting frame.

If I want to use this derailleur, do I need some type of hanger extension, like a road or goat link? Or did I just eff up and get the wrong derailleur?

Pic with current hanger is here:

Any help is appreciated! I've replaced two derailleurs on different bikes before and it was alot more straightforward.

You have to swing the derailer to a position it will have with a chain on. In the new generation of derailers, the top pulley swings up and down around the derailer rotation axle, so with the chain on it will to lower. In the old derailers it did not move because it was directly on the rotation axle, so with or without a chain it would be in the same place.

Yeah, I tried this earlier, but the pulley didn't get pulled down enough. Maybe I need to shorten the chain even more?

In picture 2 the old derailleur does not have it’s b-link mounted and in picture 3 it’s still on the derailleur hanger; is that how you mounded the M5100? If so, that B-link goes with the old derailleur, try removing it (silver bolt) and then mounting the M5100 directory to the hanger.

Holy Sh!t!! That's it. Man, I thought the b-link was the actual hanger. Thanks so much! I've literally spent hours trying to figure this out.
