I lost an Ardent yesterday, and wasn't enamored with them in our conditions anyway. Another thread search turned up old stuff but nothing particularly recent (sorry Jayem). I normally ride blues and blacks on a compliant hardtail, and am not a particularly aggressive rider. I'm more about the climbs and trying to find the traction limits in the corners. I'm looking for something with some stick in the corners on our hard and loose-over-hard stuff and rocks, but without a high rolling resistance or weight. Just a good middle of the road tire combo that isn't XC nor DH focused.

Right now the things that seem to make sense are something like an Agressor in the rear and maybe a Martello on the front, but I'm not certain. Any recs?

Try our tires. Lots of peeps in AZ with them. Lots on hard trails, too. More traction/protection & durability than a typical xc tire with minimal weight penalty + they’re super fast rolling & Versus is rider owned.
30 day guarantee, too. If you don’t like them, you can return them for a refund!

I had Ardents on my prior bike and didn’t like them. They were a problem when off camber. Now on a hard tail 27.5 plus bike with Maxxis Rekon + 27.5x2.80 EXO TR and they’ve been great for the riding I do. Great traction on climbs and much better when off camber. Been riding them for over a year.

What size tire do you run?
I run 29x3.0 and 2.6 on hardtail SS’s all over the place. I‘ve had the best luck with the Bontrager XR2 or XR4 anywhere. Prefer the XR2 99% of the time. Supple and unbelievably tuff for our terrain.

Not a hardtail, but I've been running 2.4 Rekon/Dissector combo for about a year now in AZ on my Ripley. They roll good and have all the grip I need both up and down.

I'm still generally amazed how tough todays tires are!

Aww jeez, I didn't even list my size in the OP. Dumb.

I'm looking for something in a 29, 2.6 width. 2.4 is acceptable also but would rather go 2.6. Agree with the above post that Ardents aren't very confidence inspiring, I won't miss them.

Before I switched 2.4 Rekon/Dissector I was running 2.6 Rekon's front and rear...no bueno for me, even at lower pressure, just really skatey feeling and seemed to snag the sides a bit more in the sharper rock garden sections. They do roll! But the lack of grip in the front on the typical AZ loose over hard, was unnerving.

I made an unusual choice - Goodyear Escape in 29 x 2.6. They seem to be the middle-of-the-road trail application I was looking for, and I couldn't find a single word of bad press from those that ran or tested them including over the long term. I could live without the visible-from-space branding on the sidewall, but I'm looking forward to trying them out.

I recently went from Ardent F/R to Ardent front/Ardent Race rear to DHR front/Rekon rear and absolutely love it! Minimal weight difference between the Ardent and the DHR but the DHR has WAAAY more bite in the corners than the Ardent. The Rekon feels similar to the Ardent Race but is considerably lighter. Awesome combo especially on a hardtail.

Cheers!
