How come tire manufacturers don't specify a internal rim width?

It would seem they would know better than leaving it up to the rim guys to specify a tire width.

Some companies do, but very few. Even those give a only minimum rim width.

The main reason is mtb tires are more a black art than science. How they work depends on conditions, bike setup, pressure used, and rider style and preferences. The same tire can suit (and not suit) different conditions and riders when on different width rims.

Gotcha. I figured the tire companies would have a recommended profile radius. Guess not.
Given the amount of possible tire and rim combos combined with the variables you described, I think it may be difficult to quantify the effectiveness of any tire, reviews not withstanding.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, Maxxis specifies a recommended internal rim width on the newer tires. Molded onto the sidewall in 2mm high letters, it reads "RECOMMENDED USE XXX FIT H/E RIM" where "XXX" is an illustration of a rim cross section with the internal width specified. This is the rim width for which the tire was designed, and will yield the intended tire profile.

Thanks, B. Good to know.

That should be included in the catalog and on the website.
