I was just challenged to a "commute-off" with a couple friends going after an ante for the most single day commutes to work Dec 1st thru Dec 31st. My commute is ~3.5 miles to work on road, gravel path, and paved path, with that being said I have rode a 700c, 29er, and 26er to work on several occasions. A couple years ago it was recommended that I winter commute on a 25c slick because it can cut through snow and slush giving you contact with the road bed below. Curious if any hardcore winter commuters have any advice? No, I will not buy a fat bike.

I use some ridiculously heavy nokian studded tires 700x35 on my cx bike. I do generally agree that cutting through to the hard surface is the way to go for commuting. Studded bike tires won't make you feel like you're on rails or allow you to turn like those ice racing vehicles on the Georgetown reservoir but the can help save your butt in that moment of inattentiveness.
