I'd like to shave a little weight off my VPX so I was looking at these two options. I figure my stock DHX 5.0 coil is about 800g and a DHX air is about 450g saving me 350g (about 3/4 lb). Claimed weight saving of a RCS ti spring (400x2.5) is a little over 1/2 lb. I've never ridden an air shock so I wouldn't know the difference in feel but what do you guys think is the better choice? I don't use my bike for chairlifts or anything so specific.

An air shock would save MORE weight, but be slightly less plush and leave you stranded if you blow it.

A ti spring would cost less, and save LESS weight, but the shock would be as good. Its a tradeoff.

From hearsay the DHX air isn't good very good for heavyweights, but looking at your spring rate of 400#I think you're far from being a clyde (just like myself). It should be fine for you if you decide to go that route.

I say if you're looking to save weight go for the air, but if you want the ultimate plush keep the coil. I think it also depends on what type of riding you do as well, it would seem that the more gnarly the land the coil version would be the one to have. I have had time on an air shock, but it was very limited, nonetheless, felt great to me (coming off a hardtail).

I just put a ti spring (400 x 2.5) on my VPX's DHX. The weight saving is actually ~6 oz.

I prefer the feel of a coil shock over the air shocks I've tried (including the DHX air), so I'm willing to deal with a little extra weight.

I have both the air and the coil. It is a toss up which one I like better because once I put one on and ride it for a while I think "this is my favorite shock." Then I put on the other one for a month or so and continue to tweak it and think the same thing. SO, what I am saying is that both are good as far as performance goes. Some dont like the lack of mid stroke support in the DHX Air but it feels fine to me since I like plush rides. Yea, the heavier you are the more chance of noticing this but at your weight I think the air would work.

Now, if I were you I would keep the coil for several reasons. You could buy the Ti spring for weight savings only (no performance upgrade) and send it to PUSH and get the NEW race tuning done to it for about 245 bucks and still be around the same price as you would had you bought the air. This way you get the weight savings and a very tuned shock.

If you were going to sell the coil to buy the air, well then, this is a different story.

If you're weight conscious enough to be prepared to fork out for a Ti spring, I'd go for the air shock instead. If you sell the coil shock it will probably work out cheaper than buying a Ti spring. I use both an air and coil shock on my bike and I don't really notice the difference in bike weight.
