Are thule head units interchangeable different trays? I have and older thule bike rack and the head unit has crapped out. So iwas wondering if i could buy a more modern head unit and just bolt it on my old tray.

depends on the old tray that you have...
when you're buying a new rack, the lion's share of the cost is the fork block (head unit). the tray itself is minimal in the cost.

if you send me a pic of your old bike rack with tray, i can give you a definitive answer about what will work/ what won't. if you know the model number, that is fine too.

thule 515 is a prologue pack...discontinued now, but still a much newer rack.

does it have a skewer design, or does the top fold down to close and secure the fork?

so that sounds like the old 589 velo vise....all black?
the replacement fork block for that item is no longer available.

if it was the silver one, the v2 head, that is also discontinued and no longer available.
this info came from thule's website.

the replacements for these are the peleton and echelon respectively. the prologue is a skewer design, but in my opinion, the skewer is just average.
rocky mounts pitchfork is a good value in a rack tool.
