I have known riders that had the reflectors break off during trail riding and damage the disk breaks and/or spokes.

My bike didn't make it out of the shop with them on. I know my bike shop personnel and owners because I ride with them some and I gave them a hard time asking them why the heck they put those things on my nice bike. They said they were required to put them on but that they can't control what I do. So off they came before the bike was pushed out of the shop.

If I'm riding at night or in the dusk, I'd go with a headlamp and one of those blinking LED lights on back that is impossible to miss.

By the way, I did a 12 hour team race earlier this year and some dude put these purple fluorescent light tubes on all his spokes when the sun went down. Now that looked awesome! I'd rather go with that than the reflectors.
