The faculties of the University of California, Berkeley, and the
University of California, Los Angeles, have jointly ranked the invention
of the mountain bike as one of "25 brilliant California ideas that are
shaping the future."
The UCLA and UC Berkeley faculties, working with the editors of /UCLA
Magazine/ and /California/, the university and alumni magazines of UCLA
and UC Berkeley, rank the invention of the mountain bike as one of 25
"transformative" and "brilliant" California ideas "that were either
created or took off in the past 25 years."
Others in this exclusive compilation include the discovery of the
structure of the early universe, pioneering stem cell research, the
invention of the iPod, the development of the Internet search engine,
and the development of computer-generated imagery.
The judges include "dozens of educators, researchers, and scientists at
both universities."
The award is explained in this admiring language: "Ushering in an era of
'extreme sports,' mountain bikes helped change the way Americans view
athletics. Outdoor sports was no longer just a distraction for the
intrepid young. We adopted a 'sports-for-life' ethos, according to Gary
Fisher, who credits the change to a motley group of off-road racers on
the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais in the late seventies."

Hmm? Isn't it interesting how many of the others inventions mentioned in this compilation correlate with the mountain biking invention or are a spawn of it.
1. discovery of the structure of the early universe: OK, i got nothing for this one.....:???:

2. pioneering stem cell research:
Once mountain biking started to evolve, stem cell research became a potential necessity, b/c of all the different issues incurred from mountain biking; increased deseases (drinking bad water from streams, getting poison oak, insect bites & etc), injuries, bone fratures & etc (see AquaHolic) and lost of brain cells from oxygen depletion (Trans-Rockies Challenge).

3. the invention of the iPod:
How would we make it to the top of those grueling climbs without Metallica blasting out ears drums...or what else would we use to drown out the whinning, complaining or annoying comments of our friends (Rut), girlfriends, wives, & etc as we churn up SJT.

4. the development of the Internet search engine: What would use to find all our custom frames, jerseys, rotors, nipples and of course.....mtb forums!

5. development of computer-generated imagery: How else would Aquaholic create all those amazing "images" of him doing all those incredible drops, jumps and etc......

To me; it appears the invention of the mountain bike is resposible for many other inventions....
