Terrago or What?

Newby here going to purchase my first new bike for 18 years, wanting a mid-range XC. Got my eye on a Giant Terrago. Does anyone have any other alternatives I should be looking at my budget is £400. Slightly worried about the forks on the Terrago, and would sacrifice the hydraulic breaks for cable discs and better forks.
Please help!
