I to have done some time down there, good people abound, but not a MTB area.

MTBish without much driving - Bicycle Post Trails near Greenville, sponsored by bike shop of the same name, are your best bet, with some riding around Havelock, Wilmington and Fayetteville.
Road riding is flat but plenty of good county roads to chug out some hours.
And you are not far from some decent small swell surf on occasion.

Sweet trail about 30 miles west of Wilson in Clayton - Legend Park. Great trails.
Head to Raleigh and you will have even more choices.

Leave the skinny wheels at home. You will have some driving but not that bad:

I "may" try to bring the road bike as well, not my preference.
I was in the RTP area back in 97-98, but the kids were a younger and riding was more than infrequent.
Been off the bike since Halloween, broke a couple ribs and then the snow started flying.
Hoping to get out a couple times before I head east, probably be in NC starting in Feb.

You will find the Wilson area and East to be pretty/very flat. Head West toward Raleigh for more hills.

Also, if riding in the woods outside of Wilson....wear orange! Don't want to get shot by some overzealous hunter!
