I have an x-fusion air shock and a Manitou Splice Comp fork...and both kind of seem bottom of the line so I am gonna replace them...and I want to know what I should replace first and what will have the biggest impact. Does the rear shock or the fork change the ride the most? So...please give me suggestios.

Also I want to know whether a air shock or a coil would be better? I ride trails and usually they are more advanced???
General guidelines

Without knowing more details (e.g. your weight, riding style, size of drops you may do, type of bike, etc.) it is difficult to give you really specific advice. I can offer the following general guidelines:

  • Coil: Good for aggressive riding with big drops; works best for heavy (200+ lbs) riders; generally cheaper than air shocks/forks but more plush; typically does not have a pedaling platform feature (e.g. SPV, Terralogic, etc.) so it will "bob" more during pedaling.
  • Air: Best suited for cross country or trail riding with max drops in the 2-4 foot range; not good for heavy riders; very adjustable; usually more expensive than equivalent coil models; higher end air shocks/forks come with pedaling platform adjustments so you can tune out "bob"; not as plush as coils but usually weigh less.

Remember, these are only general guidelines. There are air shocks and forks available that blur the line with coils when it comes to plushness and big hit performance. Also, air shocks/forks may be less durable when used for aggressive riding and bigger hits.

Hope this helps! :)
