Superfly 29 sizing.

1206 Views 14 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Brewboy74
So im looking at purchasing a superfly 29 frameset but looking at the sizing I had a question. I was looking at a large or 19". based on the geometry it says the top tube is 24+ inches. the 17.5 is 23.6. Now I know its not much but can any owners out there give me their opinion. Im 6' exactly.. Im currently moving from a 19ht kona which has a 23" tt. Im not super familiar with 2-9's having raced only 26". Also I know some manufactures have their own details with sizing.
thanks for your help.

At 6", I'd say you are a large for most brands including GF. I do not own a SF but have ridden and raced GF bikes and at 6"1", I have always ridden Larges with 100-120mm stems. I little may depend on how far back you like your saddle etc.

My main current ride is a LG Supercal 29er FS, with zero offset post and 105mm stem. Perfect fit. I have ridden a LG SF for a short period and it felt about just a hair shorter in TT length which is probably due to G2 vs RaceDay geo.

There are three guys I ride with right at 6' who have Superflys and they all ride the 19". One guy ride a 100m stem and the other a 80mm. I am 6"2" and ordered at 21" as I felt cramped in the cockpit on both of their bikes and they both ride with their saddles back.My LBS also felt I would fit better on the 21" with a shorter stem I am concerned about stand-over height, but was more concerned about riding position on flats and downhill as I didn't want to be to far forward, It seems that the 19" is probably right for you. Some people push toward the smaller frames since the shorter wheelbase handles better. For reference Jeremy Horgan-Kobelsk is 6'1" and rides a 21" Superfly

I had the same questions as you and it took me a couple of time riding their bikes and many conversations with the LBS to make my decision, but I am still wondering if I made the right one. I guess I will have to wait until Feb to find out since that is when the next batch of Superflys are going to be delivered.
I'm 6' even with 32" inseam, just got a large, 19" hifi and am settling in to it nicely. I did need to adjust the cockpit a bit to get it stretched out enough. I do have short legs for my height. Lowered and reversed the stem, got the bigger setback on the post, got a 9 deg bar. Still even with the changes I could never see myself on an XL. My prior ride was a Kona King Kikapu in 20", it was a tad large in the standover but the cockpit was nice and stretched. Good luck.
Senator,
The Hi-fi has different Geometry than the Superfly. You say you stretched the cockpit on your Hi-fi. Do you know what your effective cockpit length is now? The 19" Hi-fi has a max of 737mm while the 21" superfly has a minimum of 732mm. I know my standover is going to be a tad large on the 21", but I would rather have a comfortable cockpit without sacrificing handling. I am built fairly proportional as far as leg/torso/ arm length

I did not realize the geometries were different and after checking, they're not according to the charts on the Fisher site.

How do you measure "effective cockpit", I'll check it later but remember, I kept the same stem and I just moved the saddle back from the stock 5mm offset post to the 20mm offset. Presumably, that moved me from the stock 722mm cockpit to the max 737mm that's in the charts.

The change from the 17deg sweep bar (ridiculous in my opinion) to a more standard 9deg was huge but does not change cockpit(?). After a few rides I am now very comfortable on the bike, even more than my Kona.
Senator,
According to the GF site for the 19" frame size
The Hi- fi measures
Standover:788
Top Tube:617
Cockpit:722

Superfly measures:
Standover:772.50
Top Tube:622
Cockpit:727

Seems like you are at the max for the hi-fi , by effective I meant your configuration, which I know isn't grammatically correct.
BTW the Superfly has a 12d which while not as bad as the 17d is still a lot. Guess I am going to have some fun getting the final fit right. ( buying different stems/bars)

grendelfly is talking about the Superfly hardtail. The SF100 and HiFi do have the same geometry.
Blunderbuss,
I just assumed that people would know superfly versus superfly100.
Never assume..

Oh yes, assumptions can get you into a lot of trouble. However, I think this one is to be expected with all the hype surrounding the SF100. We've already sold 2 of them, and we don't sell a ton of high end ($5000+) mtb's.

thanks for the insight.
FWIW, I'm pretty sure the Superfly uses the same geometry as the other 29er hardtails.

my bad:confused:

just trying to help since i agonized over all this stuff last month;)
As I agonized over it and will continue to do so until my superfly arrives
I'm doing the same thing. I had a 19" Superfly, which I sold, and now have a 19" SF 100 on order. I just rode a 21" HIFI Pro and it felt really comfortable. So now I am agonizing over switching to the 21". Ugh........
