I want a spare ht 29er for commute and light mtb or to let others use when I want to bring someone riding, but I also want to experience piecing together a bike myself. Really don't plan on breaking the bank. Saw this frame on a link on this forum and imagine that its too good to be true. I'm 6,3" and about 200 lbs. Am I gonna break this thing? http://www.performancebike.com/weba...angId=-1&catalogId=10551&ddkey=http:ClickInfo

Steel is the best.
and its costly for a decent frame.
Walmart mongoose?
You can get a decent steel frame for under $200, here are a couple options

Origin 8 Scout for $154 plus shipping.

Motobecane Steel with RST M-29 fork and headset for $349 shipped (since the RST M-29 retails for around $350, your getting the frame for free!)

I've heard good things about Access frames many people swear by them.

But if you want cheap, just go used in my opinion. For example only- I'm selling my first 29er complete for only $250-again example only I'm not shipping-so no one ask. And I only paid $350 two years ago b/c it was an old model demo.

For $99 I couldn't pass it up. Pulled the trigger on a 21 incher. (Smallest available). I am used to a 19 inch with 110 stem so ill probably go with a stubby stem on this one. Any suggestions on ss vs. Geared? Also fs vs rigid?

Top tubes are kind of short for their size so it may be fine without a stubby stem
