what can anyone tell me about suntour 5000 accushift.
I have a rear derailuer and thumb shifters - new. biggest concern is practicallity/durability for 24hr/XC rider (not racer)
I ride a KELLY 29er SS. ON ONE bikes makes an adapter for horiz. drops to run a derailleur so im thinking of setting up a 1X6 option for hilly rides or long LONG trips. what casset works best and will it work on a King hub?

All advice is welcome - thanks in advance.

Suntour and shimano spacing wasn't the same, so you'd need to find a 6 speed suntour accushift compatible freewheel. Alternatively, build something using loose shimano cogs and similar thickness suntour spacers. As suntour only used freewheels back then, its a thread on hub you'll need (white industries or an older Suntour XC Pro hub would be your best options probably, or maybe bullseye or Phil wood).

I still have an NOS Accushift 6s freewheel in a bin in the basement, but its a 13-23 road block.

... there are no suntour cassettes which work with king hubs. you have to take a shimano 7 or 8 sp cassette an make it suntour compatible. sheldon brown has very good article about this, you'll find it here.

you will need new spacers, these are availiable through wheels manufacturing, a good lbs should have some of these in stock.

but i think this will be a bit pricey, it might be cheaper to look at ebay for some shimano dx/xt or suntour xc pro thumb shifters.

ciao

thats the idea i was thinking. Could i keep the thumbie(very cool/sleek looking) and use an old 8speep derailleur/cassette?
thanks for all the help
As long as it is a friction mode-able thumbie, you can do 10spd in the back, or 3 spd, or any number inbetween. Ain't friction great? =:)
