Sun Ringle rear hub quality?

9248 Views 38 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  Mk3Rider
Dropped the fatty at the local MTB shop to determine why the chain was dropping off the lowest gear so bad. Bad cassette? Chain too short or worn (it is brand new), bad chainline? Nope. A bearing on the drive side was horribly munched. The Sun-Ringle wheelset is a year old but had been ridden maybe 10x. The shop said it may happen again due to the single bearing set on that side. I'm a beefcake at 220#.

Are these hubs really that crappy?

One of the main reasons that I stock twice as many rear DT Swiss fatbike hubs (compared to fronts) is the quality of the Sun Ringle rear fatbike hub.

I re-lace at least a wheel a week.

Thank you. I just bought one of the few 350s still available out there to replace that turd
Life is too short to buy crap hubs.

Any chance somehow the moon, stars, and everything else align and the spokes are the same length so you can reuse the Sun Ringle spokes on the DT?

Honestly never looked. I cut 'em out to save time: You can pay for spokes, or you can pay for labor...

10 rides is about how long mine took to start popping and lockin. Hayes was kind enough to send out a steel freehub with requisite ring tool but that failed too. Ultimately, I joined Mikes rear wheel only club.

I've had 2 sun run ringle hubs on 2 separate wheels in the past. The first one blew up 3 times in the first year, gave up and bought a hope hub. The second hub was replaced at the first sign of trouble with a dt swiss. I've had good luck with the hope hub, but every once in awhile it "cracks" on engagement. Never any issues with the dt swiss hub.
I’m a renowned destroyer of hubs, but somehow mine lasted longer than I expected. But eventually it turned into a random pile of metal bits. Luckily my LBS had a DT Swiss in stock.

Weird…I was just thinking the other day how surprisingly good the SRC hub has been on my fat bike. Not big miles, it’s a fat bike after all, but 5-6 years of use.

I replaced the drive ring when it was brand new because it was popping, but since then, it’s been flawless.

I'd think you've been lucky, these were a very common failure part. Was an OE hub on rocky mountain blizzards. I suppose it doesn't help that I'm north of 200 lbs.
i have a set of sunringle SRC hubs and mulefut rims. I use them as a spare set with studded tires now but they probably have 1000 miles on them. No issues so far. I did switch from HG to XD after about 850 miles and i noticed that the pawls on the HG driver looked to be developing some sort of weird wear pattern. I'll post a pic when i get a chance

pretty shitty. My freehub bearings were shot 1 year of riding. MAYBE 500 miles or so.
I got 500 ish miles out of mine before the bearings in it died. Replaced it with the same thing cause it was early 2021 and my shop didn't have any other hubs at the time.

I don't have any performance qualms about the hub, it's on a winter only fat bike and works well enough for my riding.

weird wear pattern from the drive ring in the pawl area.
That's not right. Bearing would be my first suspect. Something is flexing enough where the freehub pawl support area is contacting the ring gear.
Just purchased a new wheelset from them and this is discouraging to see. I heard of their aluminum axles breaking and was thinking of replacing it with a steel one but sounds like that would only take care one of the problems with the hub. I better start saving for a DT350. But I had a set of Novatech hubs that lasted a couple of years and were flawless so maybe I will get lucky.
I used a Sun Ringle SRC (steel axle and freehub body) fat hub that came with my Blizzard 20 and it's been great. I've replaced the pawls, ratchet, and bearings because I rode the crap out of it but never had any failures; just wear items.

Well ****, I’ll have to keep an eye on mine. Was I a bind when my 6 year old Salsa hubbed Mulefut **** the bed because the freehub was welded to the axle. This hub had issues with removing the freehub the entire life of the hub, but the hub itself was great. In a hurry, I just bought Sun Ringle Mulefut replacement and running microspline for Shimano 12spd Upgrade. I’m 230 ish and do a lot of climbing so I assume this hub will not be long for this world.

Right in the middle of a 30 cycling challenge, so perhaps I’ll send my wheel off when that’s done…
