STX rear der and XT deore shifters?

In the shimano manual it says that my XT shifters should only be used with a certain cassette and derailleur. I have the XT deore SL-M740 shifter pods

My rear derailleur is STX.

How well do these work together? Has anyone used this combo?

All Shimano index-compatible rear derailluers, except 6, 7, and 8 speed D/A, are compatible with every Shimano indexed shifter ever made, except 6, 7, and 8 speed D/A. you can use a 1986 600EX road derailleur with 10 speed D/A levers, or 9 speed XTR STIs, and it'll index fine. Shimano's rear derailluer geometry and actuation ratio hasn't changed in 18 years. Your shifters must match your cassette, and you've got to use the right chain. The derailleur doesn't know or care how many gears there are.

The STX will shift as well with 9 speed levers as it did with 7s. In other words, it'll shift like mid-priced Shimano derailluers always have... flawlessly.
