Given the same resulting bar height, is it preferable to use a riser stem and no spacers under the stem, or to use spacers and a 0 degree rise stem? Is there any strength advantage to the former? Less stress on the steerer/head tube, say?

strength, i dont think so. a stem with rise has i little less "tiller" effect to it. in other words, not as much as a impression or feel that the bar is "swingin" as much as its "turnin" if that makse any sense to ya. i think it has somethin to do with the physics of some centerpoint of the bar/stem as it twists and sorta falls away. also the fork rake comes into play. thats about as far as i can take it buddy.

for a static trailer park demo, turn the bar 90 deg and watch what happens from the axle all the way up to the end of the bar.
